Sony RX100 VII Premium Compact Camera with Grip
with 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor (DSCRX100M7)

Mixing speed, reach, and portability, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII is a pocket-sized camera packing a wealth of stills and video versatility. This seventh-generation camera in the esteemed RX100 series is the second to feature the impressive 24-200mm-equivalent ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens that covers wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths for greater shooting flexibility in a variety of conditions.
Making use of the extended range is a redesigned 20.1MP 1″ Exmor RS CMOS sensor, along with an improved BIONZ X image processor, for fast shooting performance, high sensitivity to ISO 12800, and UHD 4K video recording. The updated sensor design is all about speed and enables blackout-free continuous shooting up to 20 fps for easier subject tracking. Single Burst Shooting also permits shooting at an extreme 90-fps setting for working with the fastest moving subjects.
The sensor’s design also provides a 357-point hybrid AF system for quick and accurate focus performance and subject tracking in both stills and video modes. A stacked design and front-end LSI also contribute to quickened operation and enhanced image quality. Video performance also remains impressive with the incorporation of S-Log3 and HLG gamma settings, and High Frame Rate shooting allows you to record at up to 960 fps for slow-motion playback.

This thing brought the photographer in my out to the world!

There are a bunch of excellent reviews on YouTube, so I will just talk about my experience. After reading about it for almost 3 months, I bought it for a business trip to Dubai. Oh boy what an experience and I was happy of having this camera with me. It does what you expect and then some! Good picture quality, 4K movies and a good range lens. After the trip, this camera goes with me everywhere and it fits in my pocket. I just love this camera!

Works great right out of the box!

I like that I can be a beginner and use this right out of the box! You can just start using it and it will take amazing shots. I use this camera on my hikes regularly and don’t have any issues. Obviously it is not going to be as good as the more expensive cameras with the lens attahments.

    Not my style

I’m used to SLR cameras but was looking to switch to something small and light that I can put in a coat pocket. I did a lot of research and this camera seemed to be the best option. Turned out quite disappointing. Yes, size is good but it’s very hard to hold comparing to SLR, very hard to compose the picture – despite having a viewfinder, it is barely functional. Then quality is pretty dismal – we went to Japan and pictures from iPhone came out better,

    Super clear and sharp,complicated,expensive camera

Complicated programming for novices. Wish it had more zoom. Super super sharp and clear pictures. Excellent low light. Very expensive. Had to buy book to simplify usage and again complex camera. On line manual sucks. 1″ sensor is why I bought it. You can do almost anything with this camera with accessories microphones and auxiliary stuff. All in all excellent camera but there are 1″ chip cameras close for much less cost and a bit less complicated.

    Professional grade compact camera

I enjoy the compactness of this camera, paired with its professional features and abilities to produce stunning photos and videos. This camera had high ratings online and I bought one and have never been disappointed. The menu is a little tricky to navigate at first, but it is easy once you learn it. The battery life isnt the greatest, so I suggest buying a second battery to have in case you need it.

    The Best Gets Better

I’ve had every version of the RX100 since the first one. Each one has more and better features and refinements. This one is no exception. It has many features taken directly from Sony’s top of the line mirrorless cameras. There are way too many features to state here, but this camera is the best pocketable point and shoot made by anyone. I carry it at all times, even when I have my a7r M4 with me.

    Great pics except a night

This is a superb camera. But the f2.8 makes pics at night a chance. Don’t set camera to SCN mode for night. Unless you mount it on a mount.

Fragmented dry mechanical explanation on software

I am just hoping this is a good product as a camera. Anything related to software is difficult to figure out following manual. It is like “follow the link” kind of short explanations, confusing terminology and many confusing, sometimes contradictory deadends. Many softwares to download, no coherent single software. Looks like it is written by many people and just mechanically merged into one whether it makes sense or not. At a time when cameras are completing against cell phones, this camera for portability is probably lagging about 10 years in the way it makes the software presented to the end users. I am returning it and plan to look for other cameras that has at least stable wireless connection.

It’s an excellent update to the rx100 line!

The pictures are sharp and beautiful. Honest. You’ll love them, no matter how mundane the subject. I took pictures of my toes that I liked. A lot. A lotta pictures. A lotta toes.

    Best for travel

I just returned from Europe trip for the first time without DSLR camera. Switched from Nikon Z with 200MM lens to Sony RX100VII. Honestly I was worried trading pic quality from 1 inch sensor for not having to haul heavy gear and looking like a tourist. It was the right decision this little camera locked on focus fast and even did well in low light with adjustments. I used with a belt holder and wrist strap and after a little practice had the camera out and shooting as fast as my strapped DSLR. Really enjoy the extra freedom of movement and weight. A majority of pics are keepers and I am never going back to DSLR while traveling. Suggest buying 2nd battery and the cheap Sony stick on hand grip to make it perfect. Not saying the pics are equal to FF camera quality but good enough for me to document my trip and share with family. Will say the quality is better or as good as APSC cameras I have used and the 200mm lens was sharp throughout most of the zoom distance. Happy Travels.

    RX100 vii

I have had my camera a little over a year now. I have extensive use with DSLRs and a fair amount with micro 4/3. The Sony satisfies my need for pocketability and the pop-up EV is excellent. I’m happy with auto modes, although I like the adjustability when I want it.

Nice camera, tried to love for video, but got no love back

I bought this camera to save carrying an AX33 4k camcorder for 2 weeks in Sicily. I did extensive testing before leaving (you do get wiser as you age). Had following problems with 4k video. Video button extremely difficult to operate quickly. Delay in going from standby to record, left several test shoots not shot. Mic is extremely wind sensitive, roars actually. You can turn on wind noise suppression, but you lower already weak sound acquisition. 4k vidoe excellent but jerky on pans. Added small microphone and got nothing more than noise from every touch of the camera. Downloading options are excellent except no Samsung device (S2 tab, S8, S7 ), can play sound codec!! Added Sony mini grip, still extremely clumsy to operate quickly and accurately. Added magnetic filter system. Worked well, but nd filters needed to offset overexposure. Extremely competent still photo camera. Conclusion, may be small, light, cute and techy BUT, 4 year old Sony AX33 beats the heck out if it for video! Returned to Amazon (thanks for great service). Will keep looking for AX33 lightweight upgrade. Added Nov 22: Forgot to mention that you need to set screen to bright sun to see on sunny day..but it dims to lower brightness when shooting 4K. Found out you can program shutter button to shoot video, solves my problem. I am looking at a6400 or a6600, but can’t come to grips with rolling shutter distortion.

    WONDERFUL!!!

I have used Sony mirrorless cameras for several years now while we travel around the US in a motorhome. While the A6000 and A7000 are both great cameras that I love, I was looking for something more compact for our trip to Peru in December. I ordered this in September and loved the quality of the photos and found I could easily carry it in my purse or pocket. So, I packed it and my A7000 in early December when we left for Peru. I have not even taken the A7000 out of the suitcase! This camera is fantastic! I can slip it in my coat or pants pocket or my purse but have found that I more often simply have it in my hand. I have captured beautiful scenes, street scenes and most wonderful of all for me since we have spent many hours on buses going to various sites, I can take pictures through bus windows and have gorgeous clear and focused results. Whether I use the wide-angle or the zoom the result is the same-great photos. I am now wondering what I will do with my other two cameras as they sit in the cupboard.

Perfect except for one major technical flaw.

This camera is a bit too expensive, but it is amazing. Even in a SmallRig cage it fit into my front pocket. I used a Peak Design strap with it. Photo quality and battery life were excellent. The viewfinder is a must-have. The only issue I had is that the viewfinder had strange scanlines. Even though this did not affect the photo taken, it made the image in the viewfinder more fuzzy and not as clear. I’ve attached a photo from another user that was able to capture the issue. Other owners said their RX100 VII did not have this issue, so in light of the cost, I had to return it as defective. I think I am going to replace it with the V model as it’s half the price.

Like it more than I did my A7s and it was an amazing camera.

There is a reason it hasn’t had a new version in years nor has price dropped a penny—it is all downhill from here.

Astoundingly good for a pocket camera.

No, it doesn’t deliver the detail and dynamic range of a 60 mp ar7iv with a G lens, but it’s astoundingly good for something that fits in your shirt pocket. Sharpness is impressive at 200 mm, and the focusing system improvements are very noticeable when compared to the RX100iii I previously used for many years. With its long reach and 20 frames per second, I could shoot a sports event with it if my DSLR failed and come home with a credible batch of publishable shots. I’ve shot a number of landscapes with the vii that developed pretty well in photoshop; I always end up thinking that I’d have done better with the ar7iv but this mini, to me, is for those situations where you can’t or don’t want to lug the DSLR around with one or two heavy lenses. The viewfinder is a nice addition, and having previously toted my RX100iii in my pocket for long enough to wear the paint off the edges, I know this camera will last.

I sent it back. I rarely do that

I ordered this camera on the advice of a friend. It’s so small, I couldn’t grip it properly to take photos. If you are looking for small, then this may be for you, but beware, it’s really small.I bought the Leica D Lux 7 instead and I am really enjoying it. It’s larger, but otherwise, the images are the same. The truth is my iPhone 12 pro also takes great pics, I just love the feel of a real camera. It makes me want to go out and take pictures. There is a saying, the camera you have with you is the best camera. In that respect, the iPhone wins, but for the sheer pleasure of photography, you may still want to shoot with a camera.

Amazing camera – you get what you pay for!

I really love this camera! I wanted a camera that I could keep in my purse and take on the go with me wherever I went, and use to get shots of me and my friends when we are out without having to worry about blurry iPhone things. It focuses SO fast on whatever you are pointing it at, and at night time you can still see everything very clearly. It is expensive yes but I can 100% see myself keeping this camera for the next 2-4 years and getting a lot of use out of it. It can do everything my phone can do better and that is exactly what I want!

    Pricey, but worth it

I replaced a Panasonic ZS100 with this camera and I’m happy I did. The images are great and the lens is faster (though with a tad less zoom range). I’ve yet to explore the low light capabilities, but the 4K video and action focus are superior. I only wish the shutter had a little more travel from focus to snap as I seem to end up taking pictures before I’m properly focused on the right object. I’m hoping I get used to that. I took off a star for price but really, if I could have done a half-star, I would have.

    Over hyped

Honesty this camera is over hyped and over rated on YouTube. For this price I was expecting something better, I took a few pictures inside my home of my kids and the focus is not there, pictures are grainy, my phone takes better pictures in my opinion. The camera froze on me, the lens would not retract, and the screen went black. I tried to power off and on the camera but nothing happened, then it just started up again and went back to normal. Low light photos suck, no clarity or sharpness. The LCD screen is garbage, pixels to big, you can’t tell if the photo is good or not. All comes down to the small sensor size, it’s like trying to make a civic perform like a Ferrari, the dinky 4cylinder will never match the greatness of a Ferrari v12 engine. Try Fuji cameras instead, easier to use and better image quality for the same price.

Great pictures and zoom range and fits in your pocket.

I was tired of carrying around my full frame DSLR and two lenses for walking around casual photos. And I know I was missing shots because it was inconvenient to change lenses when I needed to zoom. But I didn’t want to compromise on picture quality or zoom range with a typical point-and-shoot camera. Although pricey, the RX100 VII gave me what I was looking for. It fits in my pocket and has 24-200 zoom range and great picture quality. With all the creative features expected of a DSLR. I highly recommend this compared to lower priced alternatives.

Awesome pocket camera- takes way better photos than an iPhone

Love this camera. My only complaint is that it is a fixed lens, and it can’t take quick shots autofocused. It also has problems taking macros. So I went and bought a mirrorless to help with that issue. Love the fact that you can put it in your pocket. It is an awesome travel buddy. Gave it 5-stars because my husband took it, and he carries it everywhere. He loves it and says it’s the best travel camera he’s had. And guess what – it takes waaaay better photos than an iPhone. Great compact camera

An fantastic camera in the compact world! This camera provides an amazing zoom range, in a pocketable camera….far exceeding its competitors.Pure image quality exceeds cell phones, but the computational photography of phones help them to be competitive, except when it comes to zoom. This is a small sensor, so low noise performance is not it’s forte. Much above 1000 or 1250 ISO, and the quality falls off quickly. The viewfinder is great, as is the build quality. This really is a great travel camera

Very nice camera but maybe my unit is not good

I had read amazing reviews of all round P/S camera before grabbing this deal.It is super good in quality, handling but my unit’s battery is not good ..couldnt even take 200 pictures with one charge whereas Sony claims it crosses 250+. Disapoited as i missed lot of shots outside as bettery was dead way too early and i had to use my phone then. Also shuts off when i close the viewfinder (even when i didnt touch power down button).i really hope i should have got best unit which i would have enjoyed all the time since its very pockatable and versatile camera… maybe my unit was bad so giving 3 stars.

    Fantastic little camera

This is an amazing camera, solid as a rock, complex as a Rubick’s cube. It’s full of tricks and wonderful surprises, but it can also be used in “easy” mode. I can’t think of a thing to say negative about it. Just be careful not to drop it. Use the wrist band, buy the fantastic Aproca case, use the heck out of it. You’ll love it. It fits in your pocket!

    Just the best

Hands down the best camera for its size that you can buy. Does everything the big DSLRs can do except for changing lenses. But with a 24-200 optical zoom built in, why would you want to? The best camera you’ll ever have in your pocket.

    Well Worth the Pricetag

Ok, so to keep it simple. As I stated, its worth the price of $1200. Why? Because it is a 20MP pocket camera, that has 4k recording with audio input. As well as an awesome focal range. Starting at a wide 24mm to a 200mm telephoto range. Whats not to like? Its awesome. Don’t expect bird photography though. Now the lengthy part…I’m coming from owning a fair share of cameras as a professional photographer. As of this review, I have a Sony A7m2 with the kit lens, but also the 70200g f4 lens, plus other various lenses. The Sony a6000 + nex 5n, RX100m3, Fuji X100F. Further down in the review III will be the RX100m3 and VII is the one the review is for.Why does this become part of the review? Its because I can put this camera against some stiff competition before writing this review. As far as usefulness, I think this camera is 10/10. I used to carry the RX100m3 along everywhere with me because of its size. I kept it, for the fact that it has f1.8 at its widest vs 2.8 of the RX100m7. Now I carry the III and the VII everywhere. However, the one I have used primarily these past few weeks have been the VII because of its reach. I know 90% of my photos never exceed the range of 70mm. Found this out a 3rd time because of a 2 month trip to Viet Nam and Japan where I took only the III and X100F. During that trip I only encountered maybe 5 times max where I wish I had 200mm reach. Well, now I have that, and more. I’ll upload photos later after this review.Build quality: 10/10Is basically the same as you can expect from Sony and its previous RX models. Same high quality.Image quality: 8/10I love it. Obviously it won’t compete with the bigger cameras I have, but in good lighting (always a key) the image quality is amazing. The range this camera provides helps in making better bokeh portraits compared to the 24-70mm range of previous models (not including the VI). *my opinion you may not agreeVideo: N/AHonestly, not much a video person. Having an option to add a mic really pushed me to buying this camera. That was the selling point to me. Otherwise I wouldn’t have bought this since I didn’t buy the VI either.Where does this camera fit in?As expected, I can see this camera fit perfectly in my travel kit. Where 90% of the time I would use it while traveling, only pulling out the III when I go walking around at night or poorly lit conditions. If you know the limitations of this camera it will not let you down. Just, as explained earlier, it isn’t going to be good for wildlife, but as a portraits and everyday camera. I think it nails it.What I wish:Weather Sealing! C’mon Sony, you pulled through with the mic input. I want to use these cameras in raining conditions. I’m a firm believer of what these tiny guys can do.

great images and capabilities, poor interface

I have much camera experience and chose this as a travel camera before a big family trip. First off, Amazon needs to step up their shipping/packing game. My camera arrived in a larger Amazon box, with no padding whatsoever, so that the Sony box (itself with no padding except the cardboard box) could flop around several inches in each direction during shipping. Concerned, I contacted Amazon and the rep expressed agreement that this was not good, and helpfully arranged a replacement, saying he would add a note to improved padding. However, the second camera arrived in exactly the same type of unpadded box. Sony customer support provided no useful infomration about the standards they require for shipping this camera. With no time to find another, I opted to use the second camera on the trip. This review is about that second camera, which showed no obvious damage. I have no idea if the image quality or software was slightly impaired by shipping damage.THE GOOD: small size, easy USB charging, rapid startup, very good image quality, super reliable focus for quick shots, great telephoto zoom, good exposure/iso algorithms. The ability to flip it to “auto” and expect good results is very helpful, given the confusing menus. Video sharpness and focus are excellent.THE NOT GOOD: believe it when others say the menus and interface are poor: They are atrocious. Do not expect to take this camera out of the box and be able to figure some things out, even if you are experienced. This is my first Sony, though. Even after downloading the manual to my phone for reference, I spent a ton of time trying to make simple adjustments and many times just gave up. If I tried this in the field, the thing I wanted to photo or video was already gone. You WILL lose shots trying to make adjustments on the fly. Also, the camera suffered occasional little glitches, eg the “panorama” setting kept spontaneously switching the “arrow” direction from horizontal (normal) to vertical (useless for landscapes) which required many menu seaches to correct.Advice: buy the optional Sony grip right away and put it on. It transforms the camera holding experience from miserable to very good. Then spend many hours setting up each button on the camera to have your defaults ready for each shooting need. Good luck with that job.Would I buy it again? Maybe, but during my trip I often wished for a Canon G5X M2 with easier interface and faster lens.

    FAILED AFTER TWO YEARS

I bought my Sony RX100 V7 camera in March 2022, with an extended purchase protection warranty for two years from Asurion, both purchased on the Amazon website. The camera takes excellent photos and I was happy with it. Until two days ago. Two days ago, I turned the camera on and discovered blotches all across the back screen. See my photos taken this morning. I had no idea what caused them as the camera was just sitting on a shelf. I had been really careful with the camera and even had bought a glass screen cover, which was on the back of the LCD lens from day 1 so the problems weren’t on the outside of the screen. The camera lens also was clean so it wasn’t the lens either. After doing some online research I learned that THIS CAMERA HAS A DESIGN FLAW. Search yourself under “Sony RX100 v7 – LCD screen – blotches – adhesive”. The adhesive that holds the digital screen fails after a couple of years and those blotches appear on the LCD screen. You cannot get rid of them. The articulated screen needs to be replaced. I checked my warranties and (1) the original Sony warranty was only for ONE YEAR and (2) my purchased ASURION two-year warranty has also expired in March 2024. Then I remembered that I have a credit card that adds another year to the warranty so I figured that maybe I was still within the three year warranty period. Nope. What the credit card warranty covers is a year after the original manufacturer’s warranty so my credit card covered the same time period as the Asurion warranty I had purchased with the camera (2 years from March 2022 so March 2024). But no longer. In other words, I wasted my money both buying the camera and buying the extended warranty! I am posting this review here because this camera is still available for purchase. Do not buy it unless you get at least a three year warranty from SONY that covers manufacturer’s defects including the glue adhesive bubbling behind the articulated screen. Even better, buy a different product. And, if you have a credit card like mine that does offer another year of extended warranty protection, the protection is only on the original manufacturer’s warranty, not on any secondary warranty so don’t buy the second warranty. It doesn’t help.

Best compact camera on the planet. Worth it?

First off to clear some things up. No, your phone is not better. Sure in good light and still subjects a phone can take images that look just as good for the most part. In very dark shots you could argue the Pixel 3 night mode will do a much better job (again if subject is completely still) However, if you need quick autofocus, tracking anything that moves, ability to zoom from 24 to 200 (not digital zoom although Sony clear zoom is a nice feature), full controls, etc…you are out of look with a typical phone. Second thing to clear up…is it worth $1200? I see this all over on the RX100 series. Absolutely no way for another person to answer that. Worth is a relative term. If you are in the market for a phenomenal compact camera that in decent light will perform with its bigger brothers than this camera is worth it. Can it replace your larger camera and lenses? Again…it possibly could. The question is can you live with the limitations? This is one I am facing now. I also have the full frame Sony A7III along with some nice lenses. I have compared and compared these two cameras in all settings. For the most part the RX100 VII does very well and even better in some cases. With the now added external mic it is even closer (no place to mount the mic, but you can see my other reviews for a nice light bracket that works great). Now, as the sun goes down the A7III jumps way ahead. Realize the A7III is a low light beast and has a much larger sensor. The A7III is also much heavier especially with a lens attached. I am more likely to take the RX100 VII along with me. Autofocus on both is Sony high end good which is among the best if not the best. There are many articles and videos complaining about Sony’s menu system which this camera also has. I say meh. I get it is not the best, but you have so many customization options that once you are setup you do not need to get deep into the menu any more. I really never got this complaint. Most buttons are customizable, you have the fn button which brings you into another area that you setup and you have “My Menu” which you customize.I realize I am not really reviewing, but I am sure some may run into this type of debate so this is just my thoughts. For me…this camera is worth the price. Whether I keep my A7III is up in the air right now. This camera really can do everything the A7III can in a much smaller body. Do I really need great low light ability? My nit picking items….Sony….include the stick on hand grip with this camera. To charge extra with this camera being slick is very petty. Also, for $1200 you should include a second battery and a small charger. Again, petty IMHO. You know the battery is not great so add another. Also…there are many that wish you made this same but camera with the 24-70 option with wider aperture. I am one of those people. The 200 zoom is nice for many but lower light option would be nice

Best most powerful point and shoot pocket sized camera that will still be relevant for years to come

I’ve bought each of the previous RX100 series cameras up to the V and thought I’d stop there, with V being my favorite, especially with the ND filter and fast lens, F1.8 (both of which this new VII does not have:(. And I’ve sold each and everyone except the V. The great thing about the V as well as the previous models, in my opinion, is that they still maintain their relevance today. So why did I buy this model while still keeping my V?I like the new advanced Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF. I like the almost blackout free shooting. And I like the 200mm zoom capabilities in a much more powerful camera body that I can still carry in my pocket. All of which I’ve tried during the limited time I’ve now had this camera. As well as the ‘steady shot’ which I used while filming myself walking. I think it works great as I didn’t appear to be bobbing up and down in the video. I tried the video in F2.8 as a blogger might up close and personal and I saw a slightly pleasing bokeh behind me. I did notice that on a tripod and the further I moved away from the camera, the bokeh became noticeable sharper. The Sony AG-R2 grip still fits this model as it has in previous models. I plugged in the Saramonic SR-xm1 mic and that delivers great sound for me and a more compact package for video of my grandkids. This camera, for me, is all about a more powerful camera that can fit in my pocket for extreme portability when I travel, frequently, for 3, 4 and 5 day weekends and I just don’t feel like bringing my heavier cameras. I believe the step up from the V to the VII is worth it to me. If you’re a vlogger or someone that just wants to travel light and wants the best that money can buy in a point and shoot then I don’t think you can go wrong with this camera.

Not quite good enough to justify the cost

I was looking for a fixed lens camera with a big zoom and a big sensor that I could use for things like concerts and sporting events that have restrictions on the types of cameras you can use. This was pretty much the only one I could find that fit my criteria. For what it is, it is actually a pretty good camera. It has pretty much all of the controls a typical DSLR would have. The picture quality was probably equal to or better than what I had with my Panasonic FZ-1000, which also has a 1 inch sensor, but is much larger and has much more zoom. I was also using my Samsung S20 plus at the concert and Sony had much better quality. The video quality was outstanding. There were some things I disliked, though. The controls have a bit of a learning curve. I couldn’t figure out how to control some of the basic settings without taking a deep dive into the manual. There are also a few too many settings for this type of camera. I had to scroll through a lot of menus to find the settings I want. I also was unable to zoom when recording video, which messed me up a few times. And the video button is so small it was hard to press. If they were able to fit a bigger sensor or a 400mm plus lens in this thing, it would be worth over a thousand dollars. It would be a good buy if you can get it for under a thousand, but I can do a lot more with my micro 4/3 interchangeable lens camera, which cost less for the body and not much more with the lenses.

Great for taking photos but terrible at everything else

First off, for those who are not tech savvy, or do not need to use any of the convenience features like WiFi, Bluetooth, etc this camera is going to be fine. I give it an A+ for photos, and after all that is the main feature of a camera. Typical of Sony however – they put a lot of effort into building a world-class image sensor and camera electronics, but their software and support apps are literally worst-in-class. Its been that way for years – I thought at some point they would get it right but alas, it continues.I am a professional photographer – in general – we are less is more kind of users – and I suspect most of the amateur photogs are as well – so I could never understand why the menus are so complex. The menu system in this camera is HEINOUS – trying to navigate it in any kind of expedient fashion is next to impossible. Once set, its good to go but plan on a lot of time if you want to personalize it. Then there is the support for WiFi and Bluetooth. Its there, the ads make it sound like its a central feature to the camera – HA – good luck accessing it or making it work. Wireless file transfer to a Mac would be a great thing – I thought for sure this would finally work. It doesn’t. The manual references apps that either no longer exist, or are in end of life and do not support current versions of Windows or MacOS. So even though the camera has Wifi – there is no real use for it it just eats up battery time if left on, so I disabled it.Finding the advanced manual online was a chore as well – the Sony website lists a manual for the RX100 – I never did find it at Sony, had to go through a 3rd party site. Again, total failure of execution.Sony should learn from other manufacturers (like Apple) that get it right – either include features that actually WORK, and verify them in your manuals and website – or don’t include them at all. Advertising support for things like WiFi and Bluetooth is a downright LIE, they don’t work, at least not without a lot of pain and frustration. I would doubt there are very few who actually get it working. I tried and I am *VERY* tech savvy.I would give this camera a 10 if the software actually worked and the menus were less complex. If I could wirelessly download photos to my Mac, or even conveniently transfer them via USB without fiddling with menus every time that would be a home run. Instead, I am stuck using this camera like I did all of my full body DSLRS – taking out the card every time and using an adaptor on my computer.Again – if all you want to do is take photos – this is probably the best image quality small camera out there right now. I am very pleased with it in that regard. At this price point, it is a bit beyond the reach of the average consumer though – I expect more. Working professionals want simple and compact too – there is a time and a place for it – but we also NEED the features like remote download and would gladly use them if they were there – making this purchase far more compelling.I am keeping the camera for my hobby / trip photography its still better than lugging around even a small mirrorless camera – I will just have to succumb to the fact that Sony’s inept software team once again botched the job and made a future proof hardware product with outdated, klunky and poorly executed software. Crying shame.

The only camera you’ll ever need….Just Amazing!!!!

The media could not be loaded.

I absolutely love every detail about this camera! It’s small and mighty! I have purchased many cameras in the past. With this particular camera, you cannot beat the 4k quality. Most cameras only let you record maybe 5-10 minutes max with 4k and then overheat and shut off. With this camera I have recorded 30-45 minutes continuously, which is amazing! It holds it’s charge as well and lasts a long time. The picture quality is amazing too! This is by far the best camera that I have ever owned. It’s so small, portable, action packed, and has all the bells and whistles!

The most powerful point and shoot

Instead of re-stating previous user comments, the RX100 VII is the most powerful point and shoot camera available now. besides having a lightning fast autofocusing system, the video has no annoying 29 min 59 sec limitation like many other point and shoots do. This can be critical for recording live events and professional applications. The sound quality of the internal preamp when coupled with a good quality external microphone makes having a separate audio recorder unnecessary. About the only “weakness” is the short battery life, but there is an easy workaround because the camera can be externally powered via micro usb port (I use the Vidpro charger handle). Sure, it would have been nice to have a built-in gimbal, but the internal stabilizer is sufficient when carefully handled. Yes, you pay a price for this, but it’s justified because there are no other alternatives with these features at this point in time.

Camera has flaws, software is terrible

The camera took terrific pictures in well lit situations. It is weaker than older versions of the rx100 in less well situations.More problematic is the “Imaging Edge” software. Each time I download something it creates an unwanted subfolder for that date. for reasons I don’t understand, the photo app on my Iphone was full of over 300 empty “Imaging Edge” albums which I had to remove one at a time. I removed the software and just read files off the sd disc on my computer using MAC finder. Instead of the cool iphone control I use the 10 second delay setting and run into position.

Pros:* Can spot focus in Auto mode by touching screen* Videos look nice and clear but it constantly changes the brightness with moving video* Optical Zoom is 8X which is pretty goodCons:* Can’t see screen with sunglasses on* Can’t tell from screen or viewfinder if photo is going to be clear or not* Auto mode only seems to take good photos if there is really good lighting* Auto mode seems to overexpose most photos (brightness is too bright) so have to use shutter priority or aperture priority modeIt seems like a nice camera. Videos especially look nice and clear in sunlight. However, the photos are still too noisy if the light is just a little dim. It just seems like the photos should be better for a camera that costs $1000+

Great camera so far, just need to get out so more to play

Great camera so far, this is replacing an older canon camera I dropped on a glacier a while back. I missed having a nice pocket cam with full manual and raw capabilities when I don’t feel like hauling around my full kit. So far I am impressed with the fast focus and speed. The zoom seems to be a little slower then I was expecting and on auto iso it seems to always go to the max(adjusted the max setting.) Once I get more time with this camera I will update this review.

You have a choice between blurry photos or grainy photos even in moderate light

I’m in a room with big windows and it’s sunny out and almost all of my photos are blurry.I’m using auto mode and it’s choosing a shutter speed of 1/30. I can choose Shutter Priority, set it to 100, and then the ISO is 4000 and the pictures are grainy: again, in a decently lit room. I can’t imagine how bad this would be in a lamp-lit room. You’d think a one-inch sensor would be better in “low” light. The frustrating this is that it has a “Superior Auto” mode, which SOMETIMES takes a burst of pictures and uses the combination of those to computationally construct a picture, and then the photos are perfect. But you can’t tell the camera to always do that (confirmed this with Sony support). My phone (Pixel 3) does that for every shot, and the pictures are almost never blurry. The RX100V7 doesn’t even do that when at full zoom when in Superior Auto, when the photo would benefit from it the most. The camera needs a setting that simply does this no matter what mode you are in, but it doesn’t have it.I do not recommend this camera for any other purpose than shooting with a tripod with shutter priority, or shooting outdoors. I may use this for only shooting video if I keep it at all.

Change of rating from 1 to 4

This is a great little camera. I intially gave it a one star rating becuase it was shipped with an incorrect USB cable that wouldn’t fit into the camera. Sony Service sent me a new cable that fits, so that problem solved. Where the camera is deficient is having easy to install wireless/bluetooth connection. I’m not a code geek, but I’m pretty tech savvy and have been trying off and on for a week to make the connection without success. This should be easy, but I have a call in to Bill Gates.

    LOVING IT SO FAR

I won’t mention anything that you can possibly find from reading the description and I’m certainly not a professional photographer, more of an amateur but in order to preserve all my memories, I need my photos to look great.I currently own the Sony A7R III, with a preorder in place for the A7R IV, but since I travel pretty often, I wanted something that was a bit smaller. Small enough to fit in my pocket and not attract too much attention. The Sony A7R just looks expensive, and combined with the 24-70mm 2.8f it can get heavy after walking around a city for a couple of hours. This is my very first Sony compact camera so I can’t compare it to any other, but what I can say is that it takes really great photos (at least outdoors in natural light). I’m attaching two that I took earlier of my cat and backyard. I’ve been playing around with the settings and from what I’ve gathered, even in manual mode, there was no way for me to make my fstop constant, although I could change my shutter speed, ISO etc. If there’s a way I’m sure I’ll find it, or I’d like to know how to do so.While the photos look amazing in the natural afternoon light, I also love the option of having a built-in dedicated flash although I personally don’t ever use a flash. The photos look sharp in the camera and also once downloaded. So why did I give it 4 stars. Because of what it didn’t have.Cons.1. Camera because of it’s size can get real slippery after using for a while so I had to end up buying the attachment grip. While not overly expensive, it would have been great to have it, especially when you’re paying over $1k for the camera itself.2. Sony didn’t include a real battery charger, but instead one that connects to a USB so you technically have to plug it into your computer to charge. Since I have a new MacBook Pro that wasn’t possible for me, so once again I had to spend money on a real charger.BTW, there is also no written manual. Besides those two major things above which were my biggest pet peeve, this is an amazing camera. I also purchased the shooting grip so I can take it with me and take my own pics without having to ask someone to do so, and also purchased the camera case.If you’re looking for something REALLY compact, and you’re tired of walking around with your mirrorless or DSLR, then I say get this. I’ll update this if I run into any other issue along the way, but so far I’m loving it.Update: Took it on a trip to Portugal for a week and it performed as I expected, amazingly well. Battery life was good for a couple of hours after taking a few hundred photos, but I purchased another just to be on the safe side. I prefer shooting in Aperture Priority mode, so set the aperture and had everything else on auto and my photos all turned out great. I attached the camera grip and was able to take selfies without having to ask anyone to take my photo.Camera because of its size is the perfect travel camera and now I may just end up canceling my preorder for the M4. I was able to zoom in and out and camera all the details that I wanted to. I’ve attached a few more pics that I took, one of a statue at 24mm and another up close to get more details.I still, however, won’t adjust my rating to a 5. Someone mentioned that they received a wall plug in their camera kit, but mine was missing thus the reason I had to purchase the battery charger. And once again after walking around for a while in the heat and holding this “tiny” camera, it does get slippery, so I recommend the attachment grip. I bought the cheap sony camera case for under $15 and it fit in there perfectly with the attached grip, extra battery with no issues.

    Good, but still great??

I bought this to replace the older version V that I had owned for years….I dropped that one and the repair from Sony would cost almost as much as a new one. I decided to buy up to the version VII for its longer lens. I like Sony cameras so didn’t consider competitors….I think Sony is still the only one with an eye viewfinder in this small a camera, since I use a lot on bright daylight. I knew this version was not as fast as my old one and therefore not as suited to low light work, but I hoped it would be good enough. I guess I am at this point disappointed….the zoom is nice, but I am getting more out of focus shots, and lighting is something to pay more attention to. I am learning to take more care with my shots….allow time to focus is the biggest issue. If I had it to do over, I would probably evaluate alternatives, especially if they have an eye viewfinder.

    Great compact camera

I just got the camera a few days ago, so can’t say much about the camera yet. I’ve only taken a few pictures and they look pretty good so far. Shipping was great. The camera was delivered in less than 24 hours.

    Prospective Go-To Camera

I use two full-frame A7RIIIs, an A6500, and now this RX100 VII.INITIAL REVIEW:I’ve not only been looking for an ultra compact camera I can safely fit into my Thule 15″ laptop carrying case but I’ve also been looking for one capable of capturing video and stills at a highly efficient level, with relatively better image quality than my iPhone XR.Spec-wise, the Sony RX100 VII appears capable of fulfilling my needs and my initial experience with the camera validates those specs. The RX100 is extremely compact; indeed, so compact I was pleasantly surprised and admittedly concerned its compactness would increase my odds of dropping it. To address my concern with dropping it, I invested in the LCJRXK/B jacket case, which affords very durable build quality, snuggly maintains the compact form of the camera, and hangs very comfortably around my neck. Whenever I handle this camera, I make sure to use the jacket case and its camera strap. The camera is highly efficient. Its AUTOFOCUS SYSTEM is definitely faster and more accurate in stills and video than my A7RIIIs and my A6500. There’s little to no lag with this camera. The REAL TIME TRACKING in video and stills functions excellently–better than anything I have ever seen. It’s remarkable.IN GOOD LIGHTING, the image quality of stills and video is good, reflecting good autofocus acquisition, pretty good color science and pretty good lens resolving capacity.IN LOW LIGHT, the one inch sensor certainly performs better than my iPhone XR; but, of course, it cannot compete with a full-frame sensor nor a bigger apsc sensor, such as those found in the A7 series or A6 series. The ZOOM is calibrated to function very fast when shooting stills. With video, it has been calibrated to function quietly and very smoothly (no jitters).I hope this helps….

    RX100 VII

I’m used to Nikon’s High end DSLR cameras, but needed something smaller for use on my kayak in the ocean. This camera provides similar image quality to my D500. But the waterproof housing for it was much cheaper, plus, I still have a zoom range of 24 to 200, while in the waterproof housing.I’m used to Nikon’s menu format, and Sony’s menu really seems to be much more confusing and convoluted. I also had to upgrade from my old stand alone version of LR (6.3) to the current version of LR classic for doing my post processing. And, if you are used to a normal size DSLR, this LITTLE camera is tiny!!,, I strongly suggest getting the additional cage grip for using on land. But for my use (in the waterproof housing) no additions can be added, not even a polarized lens.Overall, the focus system is great, the image quality is the best I’ve seen for any small framed sensors, and having all of the functions (and RAW recording format) that my DSLRs have, make this little camera, with it’s Saltedline waterproof housing, my dedicated kayak/ocean based camera.

Best camera I could find that fit in my pocket

Great improvement over my 2008 Sony camera. Much higher picture quality. Needed the smallest camera I could find that would give the best quality still images, have wide angle and zoom capabilities and still fit in my pocket. I take pictures and create picture books using online services and the old Sony could not deliver the quality images I need. I do not want to carry around a large camera with inter changeable lenses. I did that for years with a 35mm. Don’t need or use most of the features so I can not comment on them. I do not use video at all. Wish it had a simple way to connect a separate flash unit. Battery life is not a problem as I always carry 2 more batteries with me.

    Excellent clarity

The Sony camera is great except for one thing. The zoom isn’t enough for what I’m taking pictures of. Luther than that, the detail is excellent, it’s lightweight and small. Perfect for on the go pics.

Great portable camera, but now the iPhone 15 Pro Max makes more sense at the same price.

This is a great portable camera that takes fantastic pictures. Lots of features similar to a medium level camera. Minor problems such as the menus aren’t well organized, the back screen touch feature does not work for menu selections; just a few features like focus placement. Also the camera allows you to change the file name of a video to include date time and leading text like “SONY” but you can’t do that for photos! Now for the really sad thing – the new iPhone 15 Pro Max is about the same price as this camera, has 47MB RAW image sizes (camera – 21) and it has a digital zoom of 200 mm.

This is an amazing camera that’s incredibly compact

Overall the camera is great and I am glad I made the purchase.I debated buying this camera for a few weeks before making the purchase. In the end, I opted for the version with the grip kit and extra battery because Amazon offered a monthly payment option for the $100 extra model. In my case, I was looking for a great travel camera that could take amazing pictures without my needing to lug around multiple lens or memorize a voluminous user manual. I’m not sure I’ll get much use out of the group kit but I appreciate the capabilities it provides, namely one button operation of the camera. I opted for this model over the discounted, older A7 mirrorless with similar optical range because I wanted the convenience of not carrying around lens and the updated optics.I like the camera’s wide range, though more zoom would be handy. There some a lot of menus and features that help make the most use of the camera. There are some more capabilities enabled when operating the camera from a computer using the Sony software, including a higher pixel count for some functions when shooting presumably indoor photos. In my hands, the camera is a little small to hold and operate but that might also be my mind comparing the cost of the camera to its physical dimensions 🙂 . At any rate, I purchased a base to provide more grip surface area.

    Better than I expected

I have had other Sony cameras in the 6000 series. The RX-100 VII thus is familiar. Nevertheless, so far I am surprised at its performance. It is going to take me awhile to learn how to use it to best advantage. I love my big Canons, but this is a surprising unit.
