Features
XA element for breathtaking resolution
Superior G Master resolution is achieved throughout the entire 70mm to 200mm zoom range at all focusing distances. Two aspherical lens elements, one an XA (extreme aspherical) type manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision, effectively control distance-related aberration so that outstanding resolution is ensured throughout the image area.
Aberration controlled for superb images
Two spherical elements that use ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass, plus two more that use Super ED glass significantly reduce chromatic aberration for sharp reproduction without colour bleeding. ED aspherical element is also used, simultaneously suppressing chromatic and spherical aberration that are common issues in telephoto lenses.
Excellent close-up performance
This lens offers excellent close-up performance for a zoom. Minimum focus is 0.4 meters (1.32 ft) at 70mm and 0.82 (2.69 ft) meters at 200mm. Maximum magnification is 0.3x. Deep bokeh at F2.8 adds extra expressive close-up capability. Floating focus ensures pinpoint sharpness even at minimum focus distance, while inner focus makes it easy to get close.
Stunning G Master bokeh
An XA element manufactured to 0.01-micron surface precision suppresses onion ring bokeh, while precise spherical aberration control boosts bokeh quality. ED (extra-low dispersion) and Super ED glass spherical elements, plus one ED aspherical element, effectively minimise colour bleeding for beautiful bokeh without unnatural colouration.
New high-performance aperture unit
Even the aperture unit in this lens has been refined to meet the highest G Master quality standards. A newly developed 11-blade aperture unit that remains almost perfectly circular from wide open to stopped down by two stops helps to deliver the kind of natural-looking circular bokeh users have come to expect from a G Master design.
Nano AR Coating II for maximum clarity
Nano AR Coating II produces a uniform anti-reflection coating on lens surfaces, effectively subduing flare and ghosting. The lens’s optical design also effectively suppresses internal reflections that can reduce clarity when shooting landscapes or sports.
Designed for refined movie imagery
The latest lens design technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift when zooming, and axis shift when zooming. XD Linear Motors and a newly developed aperture drive unit also contribute to quiet operation, greatly reducing noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording.
High-performance teleconverters
Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters extend the lens’s focal length to a maximum of 400mm (600mm on an APS-C body) at F5.6. Full G Master quality is maintained when the teleconverters are in use. Maximum aperture with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters is F4 and F5.6, respectively.
Fast, precise autofocus
This lens works with α series bodies to reliably focus on and smoothly track even fast-moving subjects. Four high-thrust XD Linear Motors and advanced control technology deliver up to 4x faster AF than the SEL70200GM. Focus tracking capability while zooming is improved by approximately 30% compared to the SEL70200GM.
The world’s lightest for superior handling
This unique lens offers outstanding optical quality and AF in the world’s lightest F2.8 70-200mm zoom. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 1045 grams (36.9 oz) ; approximately 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves overall balance and handling.
Versatile manual movie control
Independent control rings for focus, zoom, and iris, allow precise manual operation in movie applications. The aperture ring has a click on/off switch that allows the aperture click switch stops to be turned ON for tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for smooth, silent iris control when shooting movies.
Iris lock stops unwanted exposure shifts
An iris lock switch prevents unwanted exposure changes while shooting. When locked, the aperture is either locked at the [A] position or can be rotated between any of the manual settings from F2.8 to F22. When unlocked, the aperture ring can be rotated between [A] and any of the manual settings without limitation.
Natural, linear manual focus response
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually while shooting stills or movies. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise when shooting stills or movies.
Full-time DMF supports pinpoint focus
When the Full-time DMF is ON, manual focus is automatically engaged when the focus ring is operated, even in AF-C mode. This allows quick correction when autofocus targets the wrong subject, and is a great way to refine focus after initial autofocus. Full-time DMF is not affected by focus-range limiter switch settings.
Optical image stabilization with MODE 3
Built-in optical image stabilisation makes it easy to shoot sharp images handheld. MODE 2 stabilization is optimized for panning shots, while MODE 3 emphasizes framing stability when shooting dynamic, unpredictable motion. 5-axis image stabilisation becomes available when the lens is mounted on an α body that has in-body image stabilization.
Focus-range limiter
A focus-range limiter switch (FULL/∞ ~ 3m) makes it possible to limit AF operation to a predetermined range to maximise AF speed and prevent focusing on unwanted objects.
Three customisable focus hold buttons
Three customisable focus hold buttons are provided 90° apart for easy access and convenient control when shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation, and just about any angle. One function can be assigned to the focus hold buttons from the body menus.
Dust and moisture resistant design
Dust and moisture resistance are notably improved compared to previous model. All seams are sealed, buttons and switches have silicone rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring seals the lens mount. The internal zoom mechanism further resists dust and moisture while maintaining a constant lens barrel length.
New lens hood design
The supplied lens hood features an opening that allows convenient operation of circular polarizing or variable ND filters. It also has a flocked interior that is highly effective in preventing unwanted reflections. Silicone rubber is used on the circular front edge of the hood to enhance overall usability.
Fluorine front element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants or fingerprints that do become attached to the lens surface.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS delivers superb Image quality throughout the zoom range at all focusing distances with two aspherical elements and one XA (extreme aspherical) element to ensure high resolution throughout the image area. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements and one ED aspherical element to minimize chromatic aberration while Sony’s Nano AR (anti-reflective) Coating II subdues flare and ghosting. For additional reach, high-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters are available (sold separately).
Four of Sony’s original XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors deliver high thrust efficiency that boosts AF speed by up to 4x compared to the previous model for fast, precise continuous autofocus and tracking for stills and movies. AF tracking while zooming is improved by approx. 30% which greatly increase chances of getting the shot even with subjects moving rapidly towards the lens.
Designed with movie magic in mind and the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing, focus shift when zooming and axis shift when zooming. The XD Linear Motors and a new aperture drive unit contribute to quiet operation and independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring, make this lens ideal for movie shooting. Sony’s Linear Response MF feature ensures responsive and repeatable direct manual focus control.
This lens offers outstanding optical quality and autofocus in the world’s lightest* 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens. XD Linear Motors and magnesium alloy barrel components result in an overall weight of just 2.3 lb. (1045 grams); approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. Advanced design improves balance, while a constant barrel length further contributes to easy, agile handling.

Razor-Sharp
Love the versatility of 70-200 for everyday shoot or a professional setting. for the lens functions the focus ring is at the very end of the lens which is great I love the fact the zoom ring is closer to the body for comfort and stability when you are shooting. the aperture ring is small enough for rotation with click and no lock function for quite aperture adjustment while shooting video. AF switch DMF and Focus Range are in a great stop if you are shooting portrait or landscape also included OSS mode and mode are great I usually use 1 but for video i would use 3 i would play around it all is a personal preference. The weight is up there it’s lighter then the MRKI for sure but it will get heavy with long trip if you are nature photographer but don’t get me wrong it’s worth the haul. Auto focus speed is absolutely stunning for fast transitions. Also, the internal zoom is great for video when you use a gamble is fantastic there still is going to be weight shift but obviously not even close ot the telescopic external zoom. over all if money if not a problem 100% buy it but if you are looking at the G or the M+GM MRKI save the money if you can and get the MKR II.

Beware of Amazon Warehouse’s deceptive descriptions, they have no obligation to supply original pack
I just got the lens from Amazon Warehouse and it checks out alright. However, it didn’t come in original Sony brand box and instead came in a generic brown paper box instead, even though the description stated it would ship in original packaging. An hour long chat and phone call with Amazon would not produce the missing Sony brand box, it’s either return it or keep it as is. In the end I decided to keep it. This is the first time this happened to me as all prior “Like New” purchases came in original boxes. So for this specific lens, you will not get the original Sony brand box with your purchase. As for the lens itself, it’s functionally and optically OK but not much better than my Tamron 70-180mm in autofocus performance. Maybe my expectation was too high. So if you don’t need the 2X teleconverter capability, go with Sigma or Tamron equivalents and save big instead.

Wonderful Lens
I love this lens. As a Sony shooter for many years, I have a new favorite lens- this one. It’s fairly lightweight for the wide aperture and the photos it renders are really wonderful. It’s helped me take my photography to new levels. I bought it especially for the dark winters we have in Alaska and that wide aperture allows for more light and better photos of wildlife and birds. My only regret is that I didn’t buy it sooner.

Expensive but the best Sony lens ever
I have several Sony lenses and this is by far the best one I have ever used. Super fast auto-focus, super sharp images, extremely well built. The only negative about this lens is its price, but you get what you are paying for.

If you’re on the fence just do it. You won’t regret it.
If you’re on the fence just do it. This lens is worth every penny. I was hesitant because of the price tag but I feel when you’re at the point of looking this far then you likely should. If you’re just loaded and have the funds then it should really be a no brainer. If you own a higher end Sony body then you need this lens. It’s versatile and honestly much lighter than you’d think. I shoot with it daily and it’s just pure pleasure to use. DO IT!

Very fast AF and excellent image quality
After much research, I decided to buy the new and much hyped Sony 70-200 f2.8 version 2 lens. I primarily use prime lenses for wildlife photography and my main go to lens is the Sony 600 f4. But for a lighter setup that is also versatile I wanted a zoom lens to replace my Sony 100-400. I had recently sold it. The new 70-200 is excellent. The images I posted here were taken with the 2x teleconverter. I knew the bare lens would work well without question but I was primarily interested in seeing how it would perform with the 2x. The image quality does take a hit in the end but for social media posting, the end image quality is more than adequate for me. I love the lens so far. For full disclosure, I had taken the photos paired with my Sony A1.

This lens is super clear
A very good quality lens and should be for the price tag. The clarity is super and has good response time to autofocus. This will not be a good lens if you are trying to reach a far distance for sport’s photography, but if your camera has enough megapixels, you can crop without losing a lot of detail or image quality.

It is light, fast and really sharp
The only thing I don’t like about this lens is that it cost $2,800.00.I use the lens on a SonyA7R4.Auto focus is almost instant. Weight wise – on the camera it feels like a small high quality prime, easy to hold still. With the 4R you can really crop it hard and still get a good picture. The Red Dragonfly was about 15 feet away and the crop is 5% of the original picture. That is pretty incredible really, you can pretty much do anything with this lens except the real long wildlife shots. I normally use the 200-600 which is excellent, but with this one I will need to go ahead and get another camera because I need them both on the trail now. Love the lens – just get it and be happy.

Beware! 3rd Party Seller Headache
I received a defective lens! The internal mechanism was loose and the lens would slide when rotated. I am having difficulty receiving a refund due to the fact that the item was purchased from a third party. Advice: buy directly from a Sony dealer to avoid unnecessary stress and headache.

Great lens ..if only the zoom ring direction could be reversed
This is a great lens. It’s just unfortunate for me that the zoom ring goes in the opposite direction of the canon lenses I’ve used in the past and it’s not reversible in cam like with some lenses. If you like it’s zoom direction or that doesn’t matter to you, this lens is a win. Manual focusing feels natural, picture quality is good, and you can add the extender to make it a little longer without giving up AF. I switched to this from the Canon 70-200 Miii and I don’t regret it (because my camera is Sony).

This lens is pricey but I’m really liking it so far. It allows better shots in all sorts of light conditions but especially in the early morning or dusk hours. I’m not a pro by any stretch but the results I get make me feel like one…almost.

This lens is absolutely amazing. The compression and bokeh it has to offer is unprecedented. This is a must have for any portrait photographer. It’s also a workhorse for concert photography. I will never not own a lens like this again.

Mojo for days…
I can’t remember the last time I actually wrote a review, but I felt like I needed to this time.Every once in a while, you come across a piece of glass that just had that special mojo.I have skirted making the investment in a 70-200/2.8 for a very long time… and I’m glad I waited for this system and the version II of this lens to do so.The way images render from this glass… it’s something special. My experiences are based on it being paired with an a7iv.

Every Shot Looks Like a Professional Photograph
I attached the lens to my new Sony a7IV and started shooting photos. Every photo looks very professional, even in low light conditions. I am not a professional photographer. I am mainly shooting photos to promote my company. This was a much better investment than hiring a professional photographer. I now have professional looking photos on demand. I recommend this lens.

Absolutely amazing!!!
I upgraded from a Tamron 70-200mm EF with a Metabones adapter. That system served me well. When I got my hands on this baby, all I can say is WOW! I’ve shot boxing matches, baseball and softball games, as well as some headshots. Even paired with the 1.4 teleconverter, the pictures are nice. If you can find this lens, get it quick. You will be glad you did.

GREAT update to 1st generation
Bought the 1st generation of this lens, then bought the gen II… Lighter, better focus, smaller and more common filter (I use Breakthrough), better imaging. Holds up well with a 61 megapixel camera.1st gen was good, this lens is great…. But consider the 1st gen if your budget is tight, still a good lens.

Lovely piece of gear
Love this lens. The A1 sleeps with the 24-70 gm II, but this 70-200 gm II is my favorite lens and I find myself using it most of the time. It’s great for portraits and wildlife photography. The stabilization for video is amazing too.

Own both 70-200 GM OSS I and II
Absolutely love the mark 2 lens. Currently using the Sony A7RIV. Auto focus is fast and quiet. Renders colors great. Works much better with my 2x converter versus the mark I lens. This is my bread and butter lens as I am published auto photographer shooting race events throughout the year. I’m excited to see the difference in focus speeds and quality of the photos.

Insanely great lens!!!
I have been looking for a long telephoto for months and tested virtually every other lens for Sony e-mount including the original version of this lens (not so good) with my A7R IVA. Every single one had an unacceptably high rate of out of focus and soft focus shots under many conditions.Up to this point I had resisted buying this lens because of the price. Finally after exhausting virtually all other cheaper possibilities I spent the money!I am happy to report it was the best money I have ever spent! This lens is beyond good it is insanely good and the best lens I have ever used in nearly every category. I went from an estimated 30% keeper rate with most other lenses to a 95% keeper rate with this lens! The auto focus accuracy, sharpness, and picture quality are off the charts and my customers have been astounded by the quality!I cannot say enough about this lens coupled with the A7R IVA. It is mind blowingly good both for portrait and sports coverage and produces spectacular results with the right body!I should mention it destroys the cheaper shorter range 70-180mm from a competing manufacturer. Also be careful listening to biased influencers that profit financially or from receiving early access to new products. They may claim “the video is not sponsored” but receiving early (often pre-production) access to hot new products can also benefit them in terms of video views. What do you think happens to the early access a manufacturer gives them if their last product review was negative?Bottom line is I do not write many glowing reviews but after spending a few weeks doing shoots with this lens I could not be happier!

Every Day Lens
I do all kinds of photography and since I bought this lens over a year ago, it’s been my every day lens. The build quality is top notch. The autofocus is fast and accurate. The image quality is second to none with super sharp replication. The color contrast is what you would expect from a lens at this price range. The weight takes a little getting used to but it’s tolerable. As far as the value, it’s definitely worth the money. I have many lenses and I always find myself coming back to this one. I even have other GM IIs but they don’t have the reach that this one does. Sure this is not the lens for wide angle shots or other niche type shots but for an all around lens, I’m very satisfied.

Can not live without it!
As a professional photographer using the Sony A1, I can confidently say that the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens is a remarkable addition to my gear. Here are a few reasons why this lens deserves a five-star rating:**Exceptional Image Quality**The optical quality of the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is simply outstanding. The sharpness across the entire zoom range is impressive, with beautifully rendered details and minimal distortion. Whether I’m shooting portraits, wildlife, or sports, the images come out crystal clear with vibrant colors and excellent contrast.**Fast and Reliable Autofocus**The autofocus system on this lens is both fast and reliable, making it ideal for capturing moving subjects. The Eye AF feature works flawlessly, allowing me to achieve razor-sharp focus on my subjects’ eyes, which is crucial in professional photography.**Build Quality and Ergonomics**Sony’s G Master series is known for its robust construction, and this lens is no exception. It feels solid in hand, yet it’s surprisingly lightweight considering its capabilities, which is a significant advantage for long shoots. The weather-sealed body provides peace of mind in various shooting conditions, allowing me to concentrate on my work without worrying about environmental factors.**Versatile Zoom Range**With a focal length of 70-200mm, this lens covers a versatile range that is perfect for different photography styles. The constant f/2.8 aperture is a game-changer, providing excellent low-light performance and beautiful background blur (bokeh), which enhances portrait shots.**Image Stabilization**The built-in OSS (Optical SteadyShot) image stabilization is another highlight, allowing me to shoot at slower shutter speeds without sacrificing sharpness. This feature is invaluable for handheld shooting, especially in dynamic environments.**Conclusion**Overall, the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens delivers exceptional performance and quality, making it an essential tool for any professional photographer using the Sony A1. It consistently exceeds my expectations across various scenarios, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to elevate their photography to new heights.

Sharp lens and great focal range
This lens replaces my 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. It’s wonderful to carry around, and is compatible with the Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The constant f/2.8 aperture is awesome, and the internal zoom is just as awesome. I’m not a fan of telescopic zooms personally.I also like the round lens hood (as opposed to the pedal design on the original 70-200). I never understood why the pedal design was needed for anything longer than 35mm. This is a great walk around lens for street portrait, like at a parade for example.I used to really dislike white lens body with the black focus and zoom rings, but have since come to like them. I suppose it can be a drawback, as it SHOUTS “Pro gear” when you may want to blend in more, but at the same time, the white reflects the heat better and with longer focal lengths, the distortion is less affected.Over all, this is a top notch lens. Highly recommend for anyone who prefers the longer focal length zoom range over the wide angles.

An Outstanding Improvement!
My first generation Sony 70-200 GM was my workhorse for many different kinds of photography for several years. I converted from Canon to Sony about six years ago, and used to rely similarly on the venerable Canon 70-200 L. I was delighted and impressed by the better performance of the Sony 70-200 after changing brands, and couldn’t imagine things getting much better. I was accordingly reluctant when Sony announced the 70-200 GM II–I didn’t think the marginal improvement possible could be worth the investment. The DXO ratings on the new 70-200 II eventually convinced me to take the plunge, and wow! I was surprised by the significant step-up in quality from the first time I used the new lens. I am mostly a sports shooter these days. I am routinely stunned by the increased resolution and focal accuracy of the new 70-200 II. The reduced weight, manual f-stop control, and additional IS controls are certainly niceties, but it’s image quality and reliability that’s critical to me. The new lens delivers, over and over again. I can routinely see individual eye-lashes and hairs on moving athletes captured at 200mm and 1/1000 across a gym or indoor arena, and images at ISO 4000+ have little or very manageable noise. I’m convinced the new II lens on a Sony A-1 becomes The Best Sports Camera In the World and have many images to prove it. And, of course, the combination does a great job with portraiture as well. Despite the expense, I’m very glad I stepped up from the I to the II. It is a significant and outstanding improvement.

This lens is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. The weight difference between the OSS and the OSS II is really noticeable, which is great for my back and shoulders when shooting.
