Not fully sold on these yet

I have been using noise canceling headphones since 2000. First generation Bose airplane headsets cut the noise in my airplane. I’ve been a Bose customer since. I usually prefer corded headphones because of a few reasons – first is I travel a lot and airplane audio systems don’t do wireless. Second is do I really need electronic emissions wrapped around my head? Third is corded will give better performance than wireless. Be that as it may, I decided that I’d give these a try since my Bose QC10s are getting finicky and it was time to look around for something new.First impressions when I got the box was “dang, this box is heavy!” Half of that was packaging but these headphones are not on the light side of the spectrum. The reason for that is the big battery which gives these a crazy 55 hours of use. Not sure I really want to sacrifice weight and comfort for that amount of time but these aren’t really for travel. But at over a pound, that’s a lot on your head for long use periods.I used these on a 6 hour cross country trip and overall they’re not bad, but not great either. Compared to the latest AirPod Pro, these don’t compare in options and performance. I’d expect every codec, every option, every level of noise cancellation from something 20x the size and 50x the weight of an earbud. And twice the price too. They look cool, but that’s about all the positives for me.

Good battery life and ANC. Average sound.

Dyson, known for its vacuum cleaners and fans and hairdryers that channel air from hidden bladed fans through an annular orifice (what they call “bladeless”), has taken a leap into the premium headphone market with the OnTrac, following up on their previous “Zone” headphone that included a built in air purifier with detachable mask (not kidding). The headphones boast a striking design similar to the Zone but a bit less industrial, unique customization options like swappable ear pads and ear cup caps that come in different colors, and an impressive 55-hour battery life. The active noise cancellation is also top tier, though it does let a lot of treble through like others. However, the OnTrac does have some drawbacks. I found the headband and earcups a bit small. The ear pads are small enough that they touched my ears all the way around. The padding and ear pads though are very comfortable otherwise, with a bit of squish to them. Additionally, some key features like Bluetooth multipoint and support for high-quality audio codecs are missing. The sound quality is pretty average and has boosted bass like most other consumer headphones. The sound isn’t particularly open or expansive and is slightly lacking in dynamics. I couldn’t seem to get the touch control to work on my pair which is supposed to toggle the ANC on/off to enable “transparency mode”. The controls are pretty intuitive and minimalistic, but I had some trouble using the 4D thumbstick. I’d often change tracks while trying to adjust the volume or accidentally start/stop media. With practice I did get a lot better with it and started getting a better sense of what the headphones consider as up/down/left/right.Overall, the Dyson Zone is a promising second debut with room for improvement. It’s a great option for those who prioritize battery life and noise cancellation, but audiophiles and those seeking a more lightweight and feature-rich option might want to look elsewhere.

Nice sounding and pretty good noise cancellation, but missing features hold them back

This review was written in late August 2024 and these have just recently been released. Many of the flaws I mention in this review can be resolved through firmware and/or app updates or included accessories. All of which may change over time.I’m rating these a 3/5. They sound very good, and the noise cancellation is fairly effective, but they are missing so many features that their (less expensive) competitors include that it’s difficult to rate them higher. **Missing Features that are commonly available in competing products**No cable is included to physically connect these to a 1/4” or 1/8” headphone output, nor airplane audio. There is mention of an airplane connection kit available for purchase, but I could not find that available on Dyson’s store. The headphones do not support common higher bandwidth or lower latency audio codecs. They only support SBC, AAC and LHDC. This makes them universally compatible, but stunt their potential for those not using Apple products for audio. There is no spatial/360 audio processing. There are only three equalization choices. A user-defined graphical EQ is not available. No multi-device compatibility. You have to re-pair when changing devices. This is a big disappointment. There is no way to temporarily disable ANC and amplify outside sounds. Not only do other headphones include a gesture to do this, many do it automatically when you speak. **Pros**Fantastic battery life. I do not believe the claimed 55 hours is an exaggeration! The transparency option with the ANC, where the headphones amplify outside sounds, is excellent. It sounds more natural than any other ANC headphones I’ve tried. The ear cups and amount of clamping pressure are very comfortable. The sound quality is very good especially using the Enhanced EQ profile. They are less bass heavy than my Sony XM10004 headphones, and less sibilant than my Bose headphones. I find they walk a nice middle-ground sound wise. They aren’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think most people will enjoy how these sound. The customization options are nice, but the replacement outer covers and ear cups are pricey. The noise cancellation is better than inexpensive ANC headphones but not as good as comparable Sony and Bose products. The thick earcups make it seem on par at first, but when tried back to back, the competitors clearly cancel noise better to my ears.I thought the joystick control for the OnTracs would be difficult to use, but after a few days, I found it quite natural and actually preferred it over the control schemes of some of my other headphones. **Cons**The case does not fully enclose the headphones. It’s more like a slipcover. However, you can charge the headphones while in the case, which is nice.To change noise cancellation mode, you double-tap on the outside of the headphones. This does not work well. It only works sometimes and sounds very loud when you try (repeatedly) to change the ANC mode. This is terribly frustrating! The thick, comfortable ear cups make these wear hot. I often had to take them off for breaks as my head was getting too warm. They do not work well for activities where you move your head up and down. I’ve had the headband slide both forward and backward when picking up the house or washing my car. **Final Thoughts**If you use an Android device, there are several over-the-ear options that support higher bandwidth and/or lower latency codecs, have more features, sound better, have better ANC, and are less expensive. I haven’t tried Apple’s AirPods Max, but Apple users have many other options as well that may sound better at a lower cost. (Apple limits their Bluetooth audio codec to AAC, so no higher bandwidth or lower latency for Apple users.)I don’t dislike the Dyson OnTrack headphones at all. I think they are fairly good. I just believe that there are stronger options available at a lower cost.

    Okay for less money

These headphones look cool, are comfortable and sound a little above average but for the price, it is just average. If they were 200 they would be a good buy but at 500 there are way better options. The ANC tap feature is horrible !! I had to tap the cups so hard that it was super loud ! The little toggle switch is terrible as well. The Dyson app is also a joke and you pretty much need it to get the ANC feature to work and the EQ function only has 3 presets. It is not customizable like it says on the website. My Mackie BT headphones I got sound way better than these and for way less. This was one of the bigger disappointments in a BT headphone for me.

Great when I want to tune out the world around me and immerse myself into my tunes 🎵…

I love the look of these Dyson headphones. They feel nice quality and seem equivalent to some of the other leading brands, but more aesthetically appealing. I love the option to customize if warranted down the road too.I noticed during updates the headphones can’t be used. I also have to connect to my music audio apps & cannot play music directly through the Mydyson app.Clicking to change the dynamic settings for noise cancellation seems finicky on my headphones. Not sure if a new update with fix. When I put these headphones on the highest audio setting and on bass mode I cannot hear myself when talking or singing. My fiancé says he can hear what I’m playing listening to when he’s nearby when it’s loud.I’m sure there is more to add to, but still testing them along as I use them.Carry case is unique- but I wish it felt more secure for such expensive headphones. Needs to be revamped.Arrived sealed with tamper seal too !4.5 stars

Dyson OnTrac Over ear, headphones, copper

I recently got my hands on the Dyson on track over ear, headphones, and I must say they have left quite an impression.Setting up the headphones was a breeze with my android phone. The Bluetooth connection was seamless, and I was up and running in no time. However, I faced a bit of a hiccup when trying to connect them to my kindle, as it seems, my Dyson app isn’t available for Kindles yet. On the bright side, my wife had no issues using them with her iPad so Apple users should have no trouble. One of the stand features is the headphones is ability to customize the sound settings through the MyDyson app. Well, there isn’t a traditional travel base adjustment. The app offers various presets that cater to different listening preferences. As someone who is hard of hearing with higher or trouble tones, I found the adjustments in the app to be quite effective, turning up the treble made a noticeable difference, enhancing my listening experience significantly.I put on the headphones to the test with various music sources, including Amazon Music and SiriusXM, I even paired them with my phone in the car just a test. The sound quality was impressive, across-the-board, with clear highs and deep base. The active noise cancellation worked well, providing an immersive, listening experience, even in noisy environments.Well, I haven’t tried it yet. I’m confident that these headphones can be connected to other tablets that aren’t iPads likely through the Dyson app available on Google play this flexibility is a plus for users with multiple devices.Overall, I’m very impressed with the Dyson oOnTrac over ear headphones. They offer excellent sound quality effective noise, cancellation and user friendly app for customization. The set up process was straightforward and the headphones performed well with various music sources. If you’re looking for a high-quality pair of headphones with customizable sound settings the Dyson OnTrac is definitely worth considering.

    Really great sound quality

These are really good quality headphones. I love the looks of them with the copper. They seem heavy at first, but they are so comfortable after a while, you don’t even notice how heavy they are. There’s options for noise canceling and charged up, last quite a while. There is a toggle button that must be used for multiple options, volume, changing the song, powering off, etc. it takes a little while to get used to which way to push it when you can’t see it because the headphones are on your head. The sound quality is really good. I was very impressed. It is a very bass sound, but you can change it to your liking. I put them on when I was charging them and it made it squealing type noise so I wouldn’t recommend wearing them while they are charging, unless it was just me. But I don’t believe that to be an issue. One issue I need to mention also is that when you change anything with the toggle, it beeps extremely loudly, which is not a pleasant sound. They came packaged very well in a sealed box and after that, a box that almost looks like plastic, but I think it’s some kind of thick cardboard and then inside of that is a nice carrying case that flattens down when you take them out and then you can put them back in easily.. Overall, these are great except for the fact that they are overpriced. But of course, most Dyson products are pricier than usual. I am a huge Dyson vacuum cleaner fan. It’s the only vacuum I will use so, I am partial to that brand.

Dyson OnTrac Headphones: Premium Customization and Unmatched Performance

I’m thoroughly impressed with the Dyson OnTrac headphones. The customizable design options truly set them apart from other premium headphones on the market. The ability to mix and match outer caps and ear cuffs adds a unique personal touch, even though it comes at a premium cost. Hopefully, more affordable third-party options will emerge in the future. The case is sleek and flat, making it perfect for travel. I wish it could fully close on all sides, however I love that this allows you to charge the headphones while they’re in the case. The innovative battery placement in the headband (rather than the ear cuffs) enables an impressive 55-hour battery life with ANC on, one of the highest I’ve seen.Despite the battery in the headband, these headphones are surprisingly comfortable and stay secure. The noise-canceling capability is highly effective, surpassing some other premium brands I’ve tried—no surprise given Dyson’s expertise. The sound quality and ANC are top-notch as well. While the price point is high, it’s consistent with Dyson’s product line, and the quality more than justifies the cost

    Awesome

Put them on out of the box. Crazy comfortable. Dyson app easy to download easy to follow. Noise reduction option is amazing. They are a little heavy, but still comfortable, thick padding. Frame easy to adjust. Buttons on earpiece area easy to reach to adjust volume, next song, pause, answer phone, etc. Out of the way enough, with handling I’m learning not to accidentally push any. Great for phone use, no outside noise distractions for me, receivers say they hear me fine, good microphone, minimal background noise. Nice storage case with a padded insert. Also, came with a double C charging cable. Directions/instructions in every language imaginable. Sound quality is amazing, great for gaming, relaxing, working, etc. Auto pause when you remove them is a nice option. I don’t have enough hours to determine the charge time. I’ve used them for about 6 hours on an overnight charge. I can easily be 50 feet from my phone, I even got reception at 100 feet but had to stay still to keep a connection. Trendy copper metal color with very dark blue padding.

Insanely beautiful… Well it is Dyson!

These not only sound good but they look like they cost 10 times their price. They are just beautiful looking. It is another well build, good looking piece of tech from Dyson. Great noise cancelling! You can change several of the pieces to different colors to customize them (not included). I was surprised to see Dyson get into the headphone industry but they did so by going all the way with these. Easily can complete with all the big brands out there!

I adore the quality of this headset. There is an auto on and auto off function when you take these headphones off. They stop playing music when you take them off your head. The music resumes when you put them back on. I love the intuitiveness of this item. More in the video review attached.

Is this a counterfeit product or one not authorized for sale in the US?

I used this headphone for a total of about 4 hours before discovering that it no longer works. It does not turn on and the LED does not light up. I plugged in the charging cable that came with the headphone and tried to turn it on but it would not. I went through all the standard troubleshooting procedures with no success. I completed the Dyson online troubleshooting procedures and followed the instructions to reset the headphone. Still no joy. The headphone is dead. I then called Dyson Support and spoke to a support person who was understanding of my problem and very helpful. She created a Dyson account for me but when I gave her the headphone serial number she informed my that it was not a legitimate US serial number. I told her that was the number on the box that the headphone came in. She then spoke to other support staff for advice on how to proceed and I was informed to check the serial number on the headphone. I located the serial number on the right ear cup under the ear pad. However, the number was the same as on the box. At that point she told me that she could not help me because I could not register the headphone without a valid serial number. I thanked her for her help and hung up.At this point I can only assume that the Dyson Ontrac headphone I received is a counterfeit product or I was shipped a genuine Dyson product that’s not authorized for sale in the US. Whatever the case may be, I have a dead headphone with no way to remedy the situation. I hope this does not happen to anybody else because $499 is an awful lot of money to throw away.

Have an open mind (and deep pockets)? You might love these. (UPDATED to 5 stars)

UPDATE: Having used these extensively for another couple of weeks, I increased my original 4-star rating to 5 stars. All of my original assessments below are still representative of how I feel, but the sound quality, ANC, and comfort just keep growing on me. I’m now convinced these can hang with the likes of the AirPods Max and Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2e.Before we dig, let me set the table. I listen to music a lot, always have. And to the extent that my modest budget allows, I’ve always wanted to have the best gear I can afford. For perspective, the most I’ve spent on any single pair of headphones was about $480 for the Airpods Max. But I’m not elitist, and some of my most regular go-to earbuds are under $100. All of my best gear is somewhere in between there.I also want to say that the actual listening experience—not the appearance or social status of it—is the single most important criteria to me. That’s one of the reasons I was initially hesitant about trying a pair of headphones from Dyson, even a review set that I didn’t have to pay for. Going into this review, I was more skeptical than most customers. In short, I don’t have any patience for gimmicks or brand hype. And let’s be real: Dyson’s short history in the headphone space has dabbled in both. So what about the new OnTrac? I put my own pair through their paces, and here’s what I think. The Good* Despite the hefty weight, these might be the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever owned—of any style from any brand. Dyson did a commendable job distributing the weight, and they feel lighter than they actually are. I love the soft fabric used on the ear cushions. I wish more manufacturers went this route. The same material is used on the headband pads, but I wonder how well that will stand up to hair product and natural oils. I’m sure Dyson will be happy to sell me a replacement (more on that below).* The sound—right out of the box, without any EQ—is at home in this price range. It’s a mature, engaging, well-tuned sound, and it’s grown on me the longer I listen. I’d put it below my Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2e and AirPods Max, but above my Sony XM5, Bose QC 45, Sennheiser Momentum 4, and other ANC headphones.* The ANC is strong and effective, but still leaves a faint white noise sound that’s audible. These block sound about as well as my Sony XM5, Bose QC45, and some others, but not quite as well as my AirPods Max. None of those others have the same level of white noise that the OnTrac produces. Still, one of the best ANC executions I’ve heard.* The ambient or pass-through mode is very good. It’s better than Sony’s or Bose’s and the only better one I’ve heard in this respect is the AirPods Max. This was a great surprise.* The multifunction joystick control is a smart innovation and I think I prefer this to all touch controls.* The case, though similar to the flimsy case for the AirPods Max, is pretty good. I like the premium material and lack of zipper. It’s not a hard-sided case, so it won’t offer as much protection as most other headphone cases do. I baby my headphones, so I’m not worried about them being crushed.* They seem to be actively updating the firmware of these headphones, and a new update was waiting as soon as I installed the app (more on that, too, below). The Meh* The EQ “options” in the app are just three presets (Enhanced, Bass Boost, and Neutral), the latter two of which aren’t very good. Enhanced—the default—is the best of the three IMO.* While the overall design is relatively safe, I don’t like how gaudy the ear caps are. I have the copper version and they announce “look at me.” As a boring, mild mannered dude, I’m not trying to get attention with my headphones, especially somewhere like my office at work. That’s unfortunate, because these would make excellent desk headphones for when I’m deep in the spreadsheets.* I have a larger head than the average person, and with most headphones I need to extend the ear cup arms to somewhere between 50% and 75%. The Dyson OnTrac only fit me with the arms fully extended to max. That leaves me no room for further adjustments. Fortunately these were still a perfect fit for me. But I know from personal use and other reviews I’ve seen for these, some customers aren’t even going to have a chance to use these—they’ll be too small at max size. I’ve never owned a pair of headphones that I had to adjust to max.* There is no user guide or manual included with the headphones. The closest you get is a one-drawing image with rudimentary symbols. There is a lengthy booklet on safety regulations in multiple languages, and that booklet refers to a user manual, despite there not being one in the packaging. Some of the buttons were self-explanatory, but other functions weren’t and a hard copy guide would have been nice.* When the headphones are off your head and folded flat, the power button and multifunction “joystick” button press against each other. And if you hold them or lay them down just right, you may engage one or both buttons. I don’t see this as a concerning problem with the headphone’s on/off status and accidental battery usage (time will tell), but it was a design oversight nonetheless. To be fair, once the ear cup arms are fully retracted, this is not an issue.* Dyson has positioned these already-expensive headphones as an entry point for additional purchases. The packaging, the app, and the emails (that you’re now subscribed to because it was required for using the app), are all ongoing efforts to sell you multi-colored ear pads and “outer caps” ($50 per set). Beginning with the unboxing and app set-up, and periodically since then, it’s felt like Dyson’s true motives are more about upselling me and gathering my data than the actual user experience. The Bad* When I can, I avoid installing apps for any headphones. I appreciate good EQ functions and the ability to push firmware updates, but I’d prefer that headphones sound their best and “just work” on their own, without requiring yet another app. I wasn’t going to install the Dyson app, but once I realized how much it’s responsible for (and for you, the reader), I begrudgingly did it anyway. While the app design is fine and functional, the sheer number of set-up steps was ridiculous. You will be required to create a personal account in order to use this; there’s no way around that. You’re also forced to give a first and last name, include the date of purchase, give it access to your location, and some other things. YOU CANNOT USE THE APP or the functionality that comes with it, if you don’t volunteer all of this information. All of this was annoying, but the forced location data was a step too far in my opinion. Dyson shouldn’t need to know where I live, work, and travel in order for me to change EQ and ANC settings.* The two “taps” needed to change sound modes on either ear cup are insane. Like, laughably bad. I thought I had a defective pair for a while. I kept double tapping all over both ear cups, starting with normal taps and gradually tapping them harder and harder. Finally, out of frustration, I kind of smashed them hard with the pad of my finger—I mean HARD—and the ANC mode finally changed. After a lot more testing, I learned that this is apparently how they’re designed. If it doesn’t sound like a big deal, wait until you have to do it yourself. The tapping force required is unnatural, and doesn’t sound pleasant when it’s directly facing your ear canal. On that note, the confirmation tone that’s played when you change ANC modes is equally loud and disruptive. It doesn’t need to be, but it is. *Update: I discovered you can also tap on the outside of the headband, which works better and isn’t so loud.tl;dr: Despite their design quirks, a data-intrusive app, and a few other nuisances, the Dyson OnTrac headphones have some innovative features, great sound quality, and very good ANC. If you’re comfortable spending $500 on a pair of headphones, and can live with the challenges mentioned above, you might just fall in love with these.

Dyson’s second attempt at headphones still fall flat

For those unaware, Dyson came out with a pair of headphones a year or two ago that came with a built-in air filter. It wasn’t rated for any specific level of filtering, it was just supposed to make the air a little cleaner around your mouth. It had an adjustable mouth guard and made people look like Cyberpunk Bane cosplayers. Dyson is back with a new pair of headphones without the air filtration.Enter the OnTrac headphones. A pair of premium over-ear, ANC headphones with a few interesting options but fall flat when compared to other headphones in the $250-$550 price range. I’ll go over the positives first. Although these headphones are heavy, they’are comfortable and are more comfortable than other flagship ANC headphones I’ve used. Not quite Bose-level comfortable, but better than the AirPods Max. That’s because Dyson included a puffy pad at the top of the headband. It looks like there’s a series of 3, but the two to the left and right are actually the batteries for the left and right ear cups. It’s an interesting design that stops the headphones from sticking out due to having deep ear cups. It keeps the headphones balanced and they haven’t tipped from one side or another on my head. The ear cup padding is soft and comfortable, though I wish the ear cup openings were larger and deeper because my small ears brush up against the edges of the ear pad every time I put the headphones on and take them off. There’s a reason why other companies make their ear pads stick out from the shells, Dyson wanted to keep things small. The left ear cup has tap controls and the right has a joystick. The joystick is great to use. It’s easy to find, always works, and intuiative. The tap controls have about a 50% success rate and I never used them. I would just switch to my Apple Watch for controlling music that way instead of the tap controls. The tap controls have issues because the left ear cup has a cover over it. The ear pads and outer caps are all user replaceable, held in with a small twist and magnets. So, I guess it’s fine that the tap controls have issues because they’re going through aluminum or ceramic caps. These accessories are where Dyson is trying to differentiate their headphones from the competition. $50 for the outer caps and another $50 for the ear cushions. It’s a steep price. $500 for the headphones and another $100 to change the pads and caps. Dyson offers 7 colors of covers and caps, each. Most are sold out on their website, but I’m sure they’ll get back in stock. Even though the prices are high, they still undercut Apple’s pricing for AirPods Max replacement ear pads.Dyson rates these as having 55 hours of battery life with ANC on and I think that’s accurate. Like most other ANC headphones and earbuds these days, these have “smart” ANC that will ramp up or down depending on surrounding noise. I also found that the connectivity to my iPhone 15 Pro Max was good with these. I didn’t experience any dropouts, blips, or Bluetooth issues. Now for the negative, which I feel outweigh the positives…First, despite not having Bluetooth issues, these are only using Bluetooth 4.0. No pair of flagship Bluetooth headphones should be relying on 4.0 in 2024. Sony and Bose use Bluetotoh 5.2 and 5.3, respectively. The AirPods Max, which are showing their age, use Bluetooth 5.0. But the OnTrac use Bluetooth 4.0, something I haven’t seen in audio products in over 4 years now. This also means they only work with SBC and AAC codecs. Audibly, AAC is fine and great for iPhone users. But AAC is a mess on Android and aptX would have been a nice option. Dyson seems stuck in the past with their Bluetooth setup here.Second, overall audio quality is just fine, definitely not worth their asking price. I would put these on par with other Bluetooth headphones I’ve listened to in the $150-$200 price range. It would have been better had Dyson let you EQ them in the app, but you can’t. You can only pick from three presets. One of their presets sounded fine, but the rest were lacking detail and/or bass. Still, flagship headphones from Bose, Sony, and Apple sound better. Even something from Focal like the Bathys, which are a bit more expensive, sound better than these.Third, Dyson’s app is terrible. There’s an ad on every single page linking you to their shop. I don’t want to buy one of their vacuums or hair dryers just because I picked up their headphones. Stop trying to sell me more stuff, I just want to change the settings of my headphones. You have limited options with what you can do in the Dyson app. There’s a neat live view of surrounding noise levels, but that’s it. There’s nothing in this app that isn’t in other apps. Even Soundcore’s app for their less expensive products offers more features.Fourth, the ANC is below average and below their price. Yet again, flagship headphones from Sony, Apple (even the often $180 Beats Studio Pro), and Bose have better ANC than these. Lower rumbling noises are cutout, anything sudden gets through. I often have people standing in my office waiving their arms while I wear my Bose QC Ultra earbuds. With the OnTrac, I could hear their footsteps outside my door. These aren’t good for anything more than jet engine noise.Fifth, the carrying case is terrible. It’s a thin case that you slide the headphones into. You have to fold them flat, slide them in, and that’s it. The case is hard and doesn’t offer much protection, it isn’t sturdy. Dyson could learn a lesson from Bose whose headphones can fold flat and into each other for a smaller travel foot print. That’s all while coming with a hard-walled, cip case with space for an airline adapter and USB-C cable. Not Dyson though, it’s a minimal case that’s only slightly better than the weird case Apple includes with the AirPods Max.All-in-all, the entire package of these headphones is a mixed bag that’s brought down by their eye-watering price. Audio and ANC performance is about 1/4-1/2 of what they cost. You’re paying for solid build quality, the ability to swap caps and ear cups, and the Dyson name. Other headphones might use more plastic in their build quality, like the Bose QC Ultra headphones. But they’re more comfortable, have better ANC and sound quality, come with a better case, and fold up for travel. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 also have better ANC and sound quality and a better case that has room for a USB-C and aux cables. Apple’s AirPods Max have even better build quality, better ANC and sound quality, and more features for iPhone users.Other companies have long offered custom shells and ear pads (V-Moda and Heavys), this is nothing new. But these have Dyson’s name and carry a premium price I just don’t think is worth it. Wait until these headphoens hit at least 50% their retail price, then try them. Even then, other companies often have sales that take their flagship headphones down to the same price and you’ll get better ANC and audio performance by going to mostly plastic builds, which is fine given their added comfort.

I just cant explain the Quality of these head phones..!! Except Amazing!!!

These headphones are quite superior in so many ways to many low end brands.. I’ve used so many types of headphones over the last 35+yrs for personal use of course, The sound quality is very well done, not over powering but gives off so many levels of sound.. almost as if I where literally listening to a live concert you can hear all the little things most brands never even get too.. Not taking away from Great brand names like Sony per say because they have great sound as well, but we are talking about these Dyson headphones.. these things are great..so why only 4 stars with all this greatness of sound I’m speaking of..1. The price of $499.99 is a bit steep for most budgets but I will say the quality of the material and the full sound output is worth it, because it is..2. so I’m a stickler for using the proper voltage to charge USB devices and no where including the actual directions does it say how much voltage to use, they just give you a wire and say charge it.. maybe it has smart tech built in and charges accordingly which is not entirely unheard of but I can see how some people can destroy these headphones.. I personally use the same 5v 3 amp brick that charges my smart phone..3. Accessories .. cost extra, ear cushions and outer caps in different colors cost on average $49.99 for 1 set of 2 colored caps of choice and ear cushions.. I cant say its worth that much when at the original price of $499.99 replacement parts or interchangeable color options should not be this much.. just this users opinion..4. most people including myself don’t read the instructions right out of the box, they only read them when they cant figure some things out.. double tapping the sides of the headset enables and disables the noise cancelation great feature .. also phone calls are great and crisp..learning that the button nob thing on the right side is actually a joy stick took me a minute to concept.. push the button up and down for volume up/down next track or previous track left and right.. click in to answer a call, or long press to send to voice mail..5. Gaming foot steps are phenomenal and all the small sounds pop out.. just great overall6. never seen a headset that last as long as these do without a charge and the short amount of time it takes to recharge is simply amazing…I’m sure i’m missing a few points on these headphones but overall these things are amazing, the price is steep but worth it..and word of advice make sure you buy the color you want upfront because it cost $50 a pop to change the color and replace the pads..Highly Recommend…!!!!

Used these for a few days before reviewing.

The price and Name have already been established. Those familiar with the brand were envious of my ability to obtain these for review. So I had to take my time and try the features.First off, I am familiar with good noise cancellation headsets.. dealt with them often over the years with head sets and in-ear items. I do have to say these do not make you feel like your in a vacuum, but actually cut out the noise without the negative feeling that some can give. very natural feeling and sense when using. For sound, I used them on the tractor today… clear crisp sound without the exterior noise from the engine and implements. Really nice to use, not uncomfortable and easy to adjust.. did not want to slip off or cause irritation at all.For the phone use, which I did not expect them to work as well… they were flawless. All of the calls I communicated on had no issues with hearing me crystal clear. The noise cancellation also assisted when talking with the TV on and others in the room talking amongst themselves. The battery life is really good, but the whole idea of them turning off is certain positions was really nice. The buttons on this item are minimal and the one on the right works like a joystick so you will not have to guess what button your are trying to push for any option… also the ability to talk directly for an app is a great time saving feature.Get these … if you do… all the others you will gift or give away… these are keepers.

Dyson could have a serious winner if they just took these more seriously

I want to start out by saying that from a pure sound quality standpoint, these are very decent, but I have a feeling the pads are the cause of the lack of dynamics, there’s really not much of a seal and I know a lack of seal and pressure when I hear it. If these had an option for a suede pad that doesn’t lose all the bass, I think they’d sound a lot more lively and impactful. Cloth pads might be nice for breathability, but they’re a travesty when it comes to sound quality and that applies to EVERY headphone that comes with cloth/velour pads. Sound quality alone, I’d probably put these at a 3/5 BUT, the features and modularity and customization options as well as easily replaceable parts that are readily available is AMAZING for someone that wants to be able to have a long lasting headphone with repair options in case of accidents. Because of that, I am bumping these up to a 4 star and I REALLY hope more headphone companies take some queues from these because having a pair of expensive headphones die on you out of warranty with no options to recoup any losses can be a real kick to the gut when you aren’t expecting a big expense like total replacement.Comfort is actually really good for me, personally, and I was a little worried about that because I have a pretty big noggin and tend to have issues with a lot of headphones fitting weird but these are actually great. The Bluetooth connection is rock solid, the app is just ok, but works well and doesn’t seem to have any glitches like most other customization apps for Bluetooth headphones. The build is a bit on the heavy side, but with that heft, comes a real feel of durability and I think Dyson designed these really well to stand the test of time. The controls are a little weird to get used to at first, but after you get it down, they’re actually really nice and the sensor for pausing when you take them off your head is a really nice touch. There’s a lot of little things I keep noticing over time that are really nice and well thought out features that you’d never notice until you realize that it would be a problem on most any other headphone. If anyone at Dyson reads this, give the option for suede or leather pads, possibly with a perforated interior, and these headphones could really come alive AND the ANC would be significantly better, instead of being on par with ~$60 ANC headphones. These headphones are by no means bad, in fact, they’re some of the best built and designed headphones I’ve seen, but the sound quality and ANC could use some serious refining and being that those are both core features of these headphones, along with a $500 price tag, I personally expect a lot more. You’re close, Dyson, but these should have gone through more testing before dropping at that price point.

Gaming Without Any Lawn Mowers in the Background Or Aunties Yelling About Launch or Monster Noise

I want to give this a clean 5 but. The headphone’s have their limits so 5 with caveats. They are easy to use as windows headphones but only connect via blue tooth which places its performance subrogated to the systems blue tooth performance. There is no need to install an app and there is no app for Win 10 anyway. So for my no new app policy this works well. The headphones are designed for modern phones running the latest software and with it on a phone the app opens a world of options to adjust and keeps the headphones up to date with software updates. Man these things are impressive in the no brainer to operate department. Charged up and connected the blue tooth with pleasing ease on my windows 10 tower. No directions other than a button guide. Then I took it down stairs to the 10 year old win 10 tower. It connected up just as pleasingly fast. Up stairs game play was good with the somewhat weighty headphones comfortably resting on my head only. noticed when I moved. The sound output maxed is not cat puking loud but the bass such as the sound of an elephant’s step at distance was clearly portrayed. The very low range is a testament to high fidelity of the internal amp and speaker combination. Additionally, the surround was very successful in directional sounds including from behind me working well! Not getting trampled from behind or out flanked. The noise canceling is exceptional as well so it could prompt some backlash form the entitled ignored. But !!!! It is nice to dive into a cave without a lawn mower starting in the background. Ok a 5.

Sound quality is way better than my older brand name headphones, but they are heavy and bulky on me

These Dyson Ontrac headphones are well made. The sound quality is very good, and there are three equalizer settings you can choose from in the app to enhance the sound quality. You can also set various other options in the app. I saw that I can purchase different colors of the ear pads and outside metal covers in the app as well.I compared these headphones to different name brand headphones and earbuds I already own, and the sound quality on these were the clearest and best sounding out of all of them. Now I’m not an expert and even though my old headphones are from a top major brand, they are over seven years old, but well cared for. My AirPods Pro earbuds and Beats earbuds are brand new, but I find headphones are usually better sounding than earbuds. The controls are ok on the headphones. I found the power button operation to be fair, because of how long you have to hold it to turn the headphones on, but the slightest brush on it turns the headphones off. The power button also controls turning the Bluetooth signal on. That was another long press to turn it on, but I kept accidentally turning the power off when I wanted to turn the Bluetooth signal on. It was a bit frustrating at times. On the other hand I found the mini joystick controller very convenient and easy to use for controlling the volume, playing of your music and voice assistant. The noise cancellation is controlled by tapping the outside metal covers. There are two cases that come with the headphones. There is a hard outer case, and an inner lighter cover that slides over the headphones. The case and inner cover are pretty big and bulky, and not convenient for traveling with. Dyson needs to go back to the drawing board on these as well. My old headphones fold to a smaller compact size for traveling with, and have an inner and outer pocket for the accessories. After all of that my biggest complaint with these headphones is how heavy they feel on my head. I compared them to my other headphones and they are much bigger and heavier than they are. At first I thought a lot of the weight was coming from the earpieces, but the weight is in the headband as well. I removed the metal covers from the earpiece, and found that they were very light. These headphones just have heavy duty quality parts throughout them. While I respect a solid quality made item, Dyson needs to work on the weight of these headphones. As a women I find them pretty big and heavy on my head. They fit my husband better than me.I find these Dyson Ontrac headphones to live up to the quality (and price) of a Dyson product, and to have very good sound quality. They just need to lighten the weight and to size the them down a bit for them to be worth the high price.

    Nice, but has some issues

These Dyson headphones are pretty nice. Super cool design, I really dig the copper outers and the whole look of these headphones. The copper will patina over time and look absolutely dope! The quality is great and they’re super comfortable even when wearing for an extended time. The noise cancelation is the best I’ve had, almost too good. I’m not sure if I would want to wear these walking down the street since I wouldn’t be able to hear someone yelling at me in an emergency. But, there are some issues. You need to tap the ear cup hard to toggle the noise cancellation mode. And I mean HARD. Hard enough to hurt your finger and make an otherworldly obnoxious noise in your ear. Not only that, but it only worked about half the time for me which means you’ll need do make that annoying tap multiple times before it works. The EQ customization in the app is limited to 3 options and none of them are quite right for me. For headphones in this price range, I would expect a lot more options – a 20 band EQ would be a huge upgrade. I’m really not a fan of the entire app in general. It seems that most of it is like a giant ad trying to sell me more accessories and other Dyson products.I also take personal issue with the app in general. You need the app to use all the features of the headphones, but for some weird reason the app requires location permissions. I’m against tracking in general and there is absolutely no reason why my headphones need my location data. With all that said, these are still the nicest headphones I’ve ever tried. With some updates to the app and fixing the whole flicking your ear thing, these would be a 5 star item.
