59 reviews for Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II Digital Camera

  1. S. Vogt

    5.0 out of 5 stars

    Impressive follow-up to the G7X

I want to first discuss the autofocus. This camera DOES NOT use dual pixel AF or any other phase detect AF system in it. Manage your autofocus expectations accordingly. Especially in low light and in video. However, it does have a noticeable improvement in speed over its predecessor and for most situations it’s fine. What this camera excels at, just like its predecessor, is stills. It has excellent low and mid ISO image quality. I prefer the Fine Detail setting as my picture style as it provide excellent sharpness and punchy, great-looking colors by default. But there are a number of other picture styles to suit your tastes. I also love that this camera now has in camera raw processing, which can be useful. It seems also like Canon has quietly made some improvements to the lens because it seems a bit sharper than the one on the G7X even though they are supposed to be the same.Video quality is also excellent and quite sharp. The autofocus is pretty good but because it’s contrast detect, you will see a little bit of back and forth motion with the focus from time but otherwise it’s not bad. Great for casual uses such as vlogging. The camera controls are well laid-out. I like the chunkier grip and that the exposure comp dial has better feedback to it. The one its predecessor could be a little hard to turn (but kudos to Canon for at least including one – Sony RX100 has no such dial on top). The LCD is bright and clear and also is more flexible, which means it’s a lot easier to compose on in bright sunlight. Battery life is not stellar but once again, this also an improvement over the original G7X. It should last you a day of shooting.Complaints? I think the major one is, and this seems to be an issue on both the G7X and the RX100 series cameras, is that dust can easily get inside the lens. Even though the camera has a built-in automatic lens cap, it does a poor job at keeping dust and other particles out. I would recommend getting a secondary lens cap which can run anywhere from $5-$15 at the big NYC camera retailers or here on Amazon. I also think the noise reduction in the JPEGS is a little heavy-handed by default. You should turn this down to low.But overall, a great enthusiast compact camera. The 1″ Sony sensor inside is still relatively small compared to APSC rebels or mirrorless but it punches above its weight in image quality. If you really don’t see yourself going much beyond the kit lens if you were to buy a Rebel, this could be a great alternative. It takes great photos and video, has improved (but not perfect) AF and battery life over the original, and it comfortable to shoot with.

    Good but could be great

First let me admit that I am an older photographer who grew up shooting Nikon F analog cameras. Today’s cameras offer a great deal of advanced features but do we really need them to take great photos. I purchased this camera for my girlfriend who has taken an interest in underwater photography. After using it in a high quality Nauticam housing my preference would be for a camera that had a few more operations performed by individual controls rather than having to select a controls function using a menu. For instance, the lens has a rotating collar that like older cameras, controlled aperture size and focus. But rather than having a separate ring for each function, this camera requires me to go through the menu and change the function allowing me to use only one at a time. I guess it costs less to use a computer chip to perform various function selections rather than separate controls but it just seems to take longer to set up for a shot than the old way. Guess you just can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But as evidenced by the large number of great shots I’ve seen online that were taken with the G7 series, it can obviously do a good job.

A Fantastic Still Camera with Pretty Good Video

I bought this camera as an alternative to my DSLR gear and to get some good video of my daughters. This camera does not disappoint. The photos are excellent, it is easy to use, and is really small and light. The pros:- The size! It is a little bigger than pocket size, but fits great in a purse and definitely in cargo short pockets- Focus is quick and accurate (unless your subject is a 4yo that moves faster than a running back)- Picture quality is excellent for the sensor size (or for any camera really)- Battery life is reasonable (and they don’t take forever to charge)- The image stabilization saved my bacon a time or two. Not the 4 stops you see on a $2k lens, but still pretty good- having a dial for exposure compensation at thumb level is great- Having full manual mode as well as the semi-auto modes (Av, Tv) is great for those of us that want that level of control- The Wi-Fi works well and the mobile app (on Android at least) works great- Raw files!- Video is great (even if not 4K)Cons:- It might be small, but the metal body makes it a little on the heavy side- There is only one fully auto mode – no “Sports”, “Landscape”, or “Portrait” modes- High speed continuous mode in Raw+JPEG fills the buffer in a hurry (I know, a bit nitpicky)- If you put the strap on the right side (from the rear) you will probably hit the Wi-Fi button when putting the camera in your pocket or a snug case. That drains the battery in a hurry.- Audio quality is, well, not very good. The microphone is in a spot easily covered or blocked by a hand holding the camera. All in all, I am very happy with the purchase. My wife also appreciates that we own a camera that doesn’t weigh a few pounds or require a degree in rocket surgery to use. Given the popularity of it’s predecessor, The G7X MKII is likely to become the compact vlogging of choice for those that have the budget. If this review was helpful to you, please click the “yes” button below – it helps Amazon (and those of us who write reviews) know if the information provided is of value to others.

    BEST BEGINNER VLOGGING CAMERA!!!

I would like to say that I was 100% influenced by YouTubers to buy this camera and honestly I’m not complaining! It’s so simple to use definitely as a beginner to photography and filmography! I mostly use it to vlog and take higher quality photos when I need too but it’s been amazing!! I love how lightweight and easy it is to carry since I’ve been taking it with me everywhere in a little Fanny pack! I know it’s quite expensive but if this is something you really want to get into I would recommend it! Also the audio quality is not bad at all! I’m going to be using it for awhile until I can get a microphone but I don’t think it’s needed at all! Also the auto focus is really good and I haven’t had much trouble with it since I saw the mark iii was having a lot of problems with it! So excited and happy to be using this!Second photo is the sd card I got which I would also recommend!

    Amazing quality!

I purchased this camera about a year ago & I’ve been obsessed with it since! I high recommend buying the adapter to connect the SD card directly to your phone to transfer photos as opposed to connecting it via WiFi to keep the quality of the photos!

    I LOVE this Camera

This is my third GX7 Mark II. I dropped number one in the Rio Grande River and number two in the Guadalupe River. While one might complain that it doesn’t hold up to water, I don’t think you can blame Canon for a camera that doesn’t work after being fully submerged in water. I’ve since bought a good bag that I can take photos through and have vowed to be more careful. I love the features this thing has. I’ve done star trails, night skies, landscapes, nature photography and shot countless photos with this camera. Everyone should have a t least a good point-n-shoot and this has been one of my all-time favorites.

    Unbelievable low light performance.

I got this to replace a Canon G12 which died for the second time. I do a lot of photography at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair. This is an indoor site with dim theatrical lighting that makes non-flash photography difficult at best and the lighting also makes color correction close to impossible at best.My camera is in a box disguised as a Victorian box camera, called a mousetrap. It blocks any flash, so I have to rely on the sensor and processor to do the heavy lifting. The GX7 II does a spectacular job! Where I would have had difficulty taking a photograph due to low light and had a dark image, the GX7 gave me a bright color balanced photo that looked like it had been taken in a sunlit room! the full size sensor and fast lens really come through. The zoom works well and has a setting for continue or step zooming. The zoom is somewhat limited so that this is not a substitute for a camera set up for a high zoom ration if you need telephoto capabilities. This is a tradeoff for the fast F1.8-2.8 lens. That f2.8 at full zoom is quite a bit faster than most lenses at that relative focal length. The cons are the complexity of the menuing system and the thick manual in small type and an index that could be quite a bit better. There is no hot shoe or microphone input.

    Amazing Christmas gift for myself

I’m so happy to receive this camera, I have been wanting it for a long time but it wasn’t easy to find it because it’s been out of stock on all legitimate websites! It came way earlier than expected delivery date and it was packed perfectly. Thank you!!!!

Easy and fun to use point n shoot! Great battery life, great pictures.

Love this camera! Battery life has worked surprisingly well. I use it for bike tours. Great pictures. Wifi is obviously a must have these days. Posting pictures in the middle of my bikes rides while taking a snack break is fun. The microphone is garbage if you ask me but the video footage is great under good lighting.Low light, landscape, or action shots, are not it’s strong point. I like to use it like a disposable camera for the most part. Taking quick, up close shots of my friends and our adventures. Lots of shots from the hip with the adjustable screen. When the light is just right I’ll use manual mode which is surprisingly easy to use with the lens dial and thumb dial. Everything is really easy to reach and set so when you hand off your camera for a friend to use I can just toss it in auto and still get decent shots.I feel like the settings are intuitive and easy to navigate with a little practice. I am defiantly a novice but I feel like I can switch through settings and modes on this thing like it’s a Swiss Army knife. This alone has helped me understand the basics of aperture and speed, again. Which I’m thankful for. No view finder bums me out sometimes but considering how many great pictures I get, I don’t feel robbed in any way.

    Love this Camera!

I love, love, love this little camera. My Canon 7D has been gathering dust for a while just because I replaced it with the C100 for video then moved to the GH4 which has been my favorite camera for the past year. Bought the Sony A7S – great for low light but don’t use it much. I love the size of this thing and it has been taking great photos and videos. The image stabilization is fantastic. I was surprised at how quickly it comes on ready to shoot. Great for Vlogging camera. The only thing I don’t like is that there is no external input to add my Rhode mic so you can’t direct sound. If you have the camera close to you like you do when Vlogging, it’s fine. Thus far the focusing has been quick and accurate. I was also surprised at how well it does in low light. I have literally been carrying this thing everywhere. It definitely isn’t on the same plane as my C100 or GH4 won’t replace these cameras for professional interviews etc but will be great for a second camera or B-roll. Actually, if it had an external mic input I could do a lot with this thing. I like that it doesn’t draw attention like my other rigs do. I can get some great shots and video without people even realizing that I’m rolling. My two favorite things are the fast power up time and the image stabilization.

A vast improvement over my original G7X

I had the original G7X and was pretty underwhelmed, overall. Yeah, it was better than a cheap point and shoot and better than the Sony but it was still nothing like an SLR. The Mark II, now. . .wow. Far sharper, much better low-light capability. I tried a little comparison photo session and though I found it’s not nearly as easy as the pro instructors make it look, my shot clearly show a difference in sharpness and color. In fact, I had to shoot the G7X shots again to make sure I hadn’t done something wrong. (I’ve since read the Mark I had a problem with soft lenses on some copies, and now I’m wondering if I have one.) What else. . .a bounce flash, sort of! I think this camera will be great in full daylight, and is amazingly good in the night shots and low-light stuff I like. Highly recommended as the proverbial “pocketable camera for pro photographers” that we’ve all been waiting for. (I see Amazon has reduced the size of my photos to where they are just about useless. Well, you’ll have to take my word for it–or buy a Mark II and see for yourself!)

Great Camera for a Beginner who doesn’t mind the price tag

I love this camera! Besides my IPhone, I am a total novice at taking pictures and videos. My main reason for purchasing was to take videos to upload to YouTube, but being a near novice, I was loath to use anything that was in the least bit difficult. Easy and still great quality was what I was looking for, and this is it. If you have the $, this is a great camera for a beginner. Basically point and shoot. Some zoom. A bunch of other features I’m learning about. In fact, I hadn’t really planned to take any classes on photography or videography, and now I am actively looking for a course! The only setback is the price, and I am having a heck of a time figuring out how to use it with wifi. But with the online tutorials and the Canon tech services (which I know nothing about and will update if I do use them) I’m hoping I can get up to speed in no time.

Absolutely in love with this camera

Absolutely in love with this camera! I have an SLR and have been doing photography for a while now and was so impressed with this. I love that it’s so slim & light that I can carry it in my purse at all times. I work in social media and most of my photos lately have been with this camera. I also love the ability to connect it to my phone and use my phone as a remote. Your phone becomes a viewfinder in that what your camera sees will show up on your phone. This helps create some unique and creative self portraits! I was very impressed with the seller who went above and beyond with the sale. Originally it came without the charger and I reached out to the seller who said he’ll ship me one. Within a short couple of days he did along with a car charger and an extra battery! That was SO KIND! I am very grateful and both really came in handy. Thank you 🙂

    wonderful camera, no battery charger.

I love everything about this camera. I bought mine used and it is minor scratch details on the front but only if you really pay attention. The zoom and focus are absolutely the best for me. I’ve used only my iPhone and Canon rebel t3 EOS but this camera is worth the craze about it. The only downside is the battery came less than half charged and died after 30 minutes of use, plus there is no battery charger. I am looking to buy one separately but it would have been nice to have that included.

    Five Star Camera

This camera is great. I’m posting two photos that give some idea of the image quality (within the limitations of what Amazon allows resolution-wise). One of these I’ve already printed at 20×30 inches and the detail is fantastic. The color rendition and dynamic range are phenomenal. This is a fantastic camera for its size.I originally rated this three stars because it lacked native software for MacOS Sierra and because the software it does provide for Windows (Camera Window) doesn’t allow images to be imported directly to network drives and/or attached drives like portable SSD’s. However, given the image quality, ease of use and compact size, I realized that I was wrong and the camera deserves a higher rating. I’m using ACDSee Ultimate 10 to import directly from the camera to an attached SSD and DxO Optics Pro now handles RAW images from the camera in the Mac OS Sierra. Canon now has software that works natively on MacOS Sierra and this camera rates five stars.

I wanted to love this camera but…

This camera is great without a doubt. I was a canon 70d user, t4i before that. I really got hooked on the vlogging, youtube trend. i wanted to downsize my gear and just get this. It’s a very fast lens. i was mainly considering this or the sony rx 100 mk iii at this price point.things i loved:familiar UIgreat gripbuild qualityfast and bright lenstouchscreenfast autofocusthings i didnt love:built in time lapseuse while usb chargingunfortunately mine had 3 hot pixels and i heard this is common but it really ruined my first impression. i dedcided on the rx100 mk iii and i am very happy with it even if its 2 generations older. had this not have the pixel issue. this may have been a keeper.

All in all, a solid little camera.

After much consideration, I decided to pick this up over the Sony RX100 Mark IV. The only reason I chose it was because of the video capabilities and how well it performed in low light situations. 4K video is not a big selling point for me right now and I didn’t like the asking price for the RX100. I saved quite a bit for going with Canon so no serious complaints here. Photos are decent for a camera with a 1-inch sensor. ISO performance isn’t all that great past ISO 1600, but I couldn’t imagine a point and shoot to be better than a full size DSLR. The ergonomics is pretty good. I like the rubber grip. I don’t really like the Exposure Comp. dial too much. Other than that, it’s a solid little camera. I really enjoy using it.

Great value but missing EVF and Panorama

Great value but missing electronic view finder. Also, the photo stitch assist in the previous Mark I model seems to be missing in the Mark II. Would be great if Canon released a firmware upgrade to add that feature. You can take panoramas with most mobile phones these days. I expected this feature in a $600+ camera. Other than that, I’ve been pleased with the performance so far. Battery life is short, but passable. Definitely have a couple of backup batteries on hand if you’re doing any lengthy shooting. We took 3 batteries on vacation and it seemed just about the right amount as long as we charged all of them up every other day or so. The touch screen is what sold us on this camera instead of the Sony RX100 IV.

    Recording limits

A MUST KNOW FYI!!!! If you set the settings to 1080p 60fps, YOU CAN NOT record for longer than about 14-16 minutes. It may not be a problem for you but theres no work around. Sd cards of any kind wont help. Having the frames and resolution lower will only increase the time to about 20 or so minutes.

    Power in a small size

I am enchanted. It’s just beautiful you have very good quality in something small. It’s as powerfull (or more) as some DSLR cameras include some Canon beginners. You can take pictures and film very good videos in raw/FullHD (it has not 4k) and you have manual mode so if you want to start in photography is perfect. However you need to know what is your need although is a very good intermediate camera an you can do amazing things is not a professional camera with interchangeable lenses and the lense is delicate. By the other hand you have something light, good quality, versatil and easy to carry anywhere so is you are lokking for a complement for your photography gear or if you are starting in is the perfect partner.

AUDIO SO TERRIBLE I RETURNED IT

I’ve owned the G7x Mark i and that was a beautiful camera bought at 800$ new at Bestbuy.. I saw the new features and price on the g7x mark ii and couldn’t help myself.. I record content for a living and if my content is jeopardized my time and money is being wasted.. The picture quality is AMAZING. 1080P60FPS BEAUTIFUL!!!! THE AUDIO is was constantly muffled and disrupted with any minor background noise not to mention the constant sound of the camera autofocusing on a generally still frame… The audio just is not savalgable a good portion of the time.. I have to throw away a 10 minute video because 4 minutes of the audio can barely be heard and then comes back at 100% and back out to 20%.. Once you hear the autofocus noise, you wont forget it.. If you’re trying to be an amateur PRO this camera is not for you.. Maybe I got a defective BRAND NEW camera, who knows.. I googled/youtubed it, thought I fixed it, but nope, it’s a poor design… Super flawed, never noticed with my Mark i … Buy it, don’t buy it, Make sure you can return it..

Hubby’s iPhone 13 Pro Max took better pictures.

We bought this for our trip to Ireland in June 2021. I lost the charger in my bag (later found) and was unable to keep the batteries full so when it died we switched to my husband’s phone for a few days. When we got home and downloaded all of our pictures from all sources we were so surprised and disappointed that my husband’s phone took better, clearer pictures than this camera. So when we went away again in August 2022 we left this thing at home.

    Great for taking YouTube videos

Even in an age where smart phones have excellent cameras my son wanted this camera so he could start making professional grade YouTube videos. And after reading all the reviews online I can see you there a lot of well-known Youtubers do use a scammer. So far the cameras been great takes crisp photos compared. I even compared taking a picture using this camera in my new iPhone and the Canon was slightly brighter and more natural toned. I recommend it for anyone who still looking for a camera to complement your smart phone especially if we’re gonna be taking high-quality YouTube videos.

DSLR features in a point and shoot

I bought this camera before going on a cross country road trip, and I never regretted it even once. I was considering getting one of the rebel series canon DSLRs, but realized that all I really wanted was the more advanced features they offer like bulb mode, but in a package that I could still easily keep on my person while on the go. Until I found this I didn’t think something like that was available, but canon has more than impressed me. For its size it’s full of advanced features, along with the newest digic image processor. Additionally, the wifi transfer mode offers a very convenient way to upload photos on the go when paired with the canon connect phone app. Overall, if you’re looking for advanced features in a small point and shoot form factor, then I would highly recommend this camera.

    Great camera for non-professional photographers

I wanted a personal camera to capture my family’s moments (photo and video) and this is perfect. The picture quality is great and the sound is clear. I purchased this camera after watching multiple YouTube reviews on it, and I’m glad I made the decision to go with this one. It’s a bit costly, but I would say relative to other professional cameras its a fair price. My favorite feature is the tilted screen, it’s great if you want to record yourself and see what the camera is capturing. Would recommend.Disclaimer: I am not a professional in the slightest, just wanted a nice personal camera.

    SO GLAD I PURCHASED.

Was using a DSLR prior to purchasing this, but when I go to concerts and such they don’t allow people to bring in professional cameras with interchangable lenses so I couldn’t put the DSLR to use in situations like that. Also, carrying around a large camera with a heavy lens can be pretty tiring and if I wanted friends to take photos of me, the majority of them didn’t know how to use a DSLR so I wanted something more simple and portable for these reasons. I am SO happy I bought this. The quality is freakin’ amazing and I even use this camera for selfies more than I use my iPhone camera. It’s pretty damn great and I highly recommend it.

Preliminary Impressions Out of the Box

Just received the camera today, so these are really just first impressions:1. The photos are beautiful, bright, crisp and sharp; 5-stars for photo quality.2. Windows 10 cannot display the RAW files (it can’t do the 7D2 RAW files, either).3. Adobe RAW 9.5 cannot convert the G7X2 RAW files (it can do the 7D2 files). The Canon software I have can’t do it either. How long before an Adobe update?4. There is no setting that I can find to shoot RAW + JPEG.UPDATE: You can set RAW + JPEG, but it’s not intuitive.5. On its own, the camera doesn’t play well with Windows 10. Download the Camera Window software from Canon. This will give you complete control for transferring images to the computer. UPDATED 6/12/20166. The manual implies that the Camera Window software is for WiFi transfer of images to a computer. That’s true, but it is also used for downloading via direct USB connection which is lightning fast, and in my opinion, preferable. Once the download is complete, the USB battery charging function will commence. UPDATED 6/12/20167. As usual, the User’s Manual is sketchy and not very useful. It’s difficult to find something specific in it. There is a more complete .pdf version that can be downloaded from the Canon website. UPDATED 6/12/2016Again, these are just first impressions. I’ll update this review was I get more experience with it.UPDATE 6/10/2016:After a morning on the internet, I have solved the RAW file problem. In order to use PS or LR, Adobe Camera RAW v. 9.6 is required. Earlier versions won’t work with the G7X2. You can download the zip file and install it from the Adobe website. Then, depending on which editing software you are using, CC, PSE or LR, it may not install in the correct folder. You’ll have to move it. In the Adobe community forum, search on G7X Mark II and you will find a post with instructions on how to do that. I would have posted the links here, but I think Amazon strips them out. Now, I can actually use the images from the camera in my normal workflow. That’s huge, and for that I am adding two more stars.I am pleased with the photos it takes. I have posted two images I took last night at sunset. I wanted to see how it performed in low light. I did no color editing at all. I only adjusted exposure and lighting, added a little bit of sharpening and resized them. There is some noise in the shots, but the finished images are not bad. There is also some lens distortion, apparent when there are straight verticals near the edges. It’s correctable in editing, but since that crops the image, you will want to add a little extra in the framing.UPDATE 6/12/2016:Now that I have the camera/computer environment functioning, I took it downtown with me this morning on a real shakedown cruise. I have added several photos from the Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes, Washington. I usually shoot aperture priority, but all of these were taken on “Auto” to see how it would do. I am tickled to death with the photos the camera is producing. There is one thing I am noticing. My 7D2 (I think it uses dual Digic 6 processors) tends to over-saturate reds and magentas. This camera is not doing that. On Auto, it is also balancing the highlights and shadows very nicely without blowing out the skies. Again I got some lens distortion, but it was easily corrected in editing. Someone here asked about focus speed. I have no complaints in that regard. One thing that is a little slow is the recovery time after shooting compared to the 7D2. With that camera, I can take several shots in rapid succession. Shooting Raw + JPEG with the G7X2, there is a noticeable lag before it can fire again which is sometimes annoying. For a pocket camera, however, that’s really not a big deal. Overall, I am delighted with this camera. I debated between getting the Sony or waiting for this one. I chose this one primarily for the longer tele range and because I am already in the Canon ecosystem. Now that I have actually used it, and seen the photos it produces, I am glad I did.

I really like this camera. It’s a bit expensive for a Point & Shoot, but it competes well with low- to medium end dSLR cameras.

I delayed writing this review for 4 months, just to be sure my opinion doesn’t change. It hasn’t, I really like this camera! It takes great quality pictures. It has a zoom lens at a great range (24mm – 105mm), it has all of the automatic features you could ask for (focus, aperture, film speed, shutter speed). Or, you can select manual shutter speed or aperture and the camera will set everything else. Or, you can select all-manual, if you want to set everything yourself. It has a high pixel count (24 megapixel), and it can even be set to shoot in RAW so you can do lots of darkroom magic, if you want.I shot with a manual SLR (a Canon FTb) from the early 70’s to the late 90’s, then I lost interest. I had purchased a 35mm lens and a 135mm lens to compliment the 50mm supplied with the SLR. I also had lots of peripherals; flashes, macro tubes, remote releases, yada, yada, yada. I felt like a pack mule every time I left the house. I found out a few things about a manual SLR: they’re heavy; I took 80% of my pictures with the stock 50mm lens; and the picture quality was only good when I had plenty of time to set up the shot. Mostly, the pictures I got were just on the edge of over- or under-exposed, and were often barely in focus. So, when I decided to get back into photography, I decided to buy a new camera and I wanted that camera to offer: point and shoot for simplest use; good quality pictures so it had to offer a high megapixel rating; a zoom lens that was about the range of my old manual lenses; and light weight so it would be easy to carry around all day. This camera hit all of these requirements and at a reasonable price. The pictures I’m getting with this point and shoot are far superior to those I got from my old SLR. I just couldn’t be happier, though I will admit that a modern dSLR will probably also show a similarly dramatic improvement over the old manual SLR’s, but at a much higher price. Some cautions:1) Buy a high speed memory card, at least 90 MB/sec. Dumping 30 MB of a picture into a memory card takes time, so a fast memory card is a must to get the fastest possible shot rate.2) Look into the Lensmate filter adapter. This device enables you to attach a UV filter to protect the zoom lens from dirt and water.3) Buy a spare battery, preferably a Canon (a bit expensive, but worth it). Digital cameras live and die by their batteries, so it makes sense to have a good quality spare when you’re out for extended shooting.4) Buy a decent strap, the wrist strap supplied with the camera really isn’t enough. Look at the Peak Design Camera Leash; rugged, flexible, and easy to remove when storing the camera. If you want the ability to change out lenses, this camera is not for you. But, if you want to take lots of great pictures easily and without the hassle of lugging a lot of equipment around, look into this camera!

    Love the camera

This is my 11th-15th digital camera. Its somewhere around that number. I’ve always upgraded and I never keep this old cameras around me what so ever. Currently posses the Nikon D5500, GoPro 4 Silver, and this camera. My last pocket camera was the Sony RX100 M2. I was originally waiting for the Sony RX100 M5 to come out but it never did until last month. I decided to buy this G7X M2 camera since its $700. Part of the big reason is the LCD screen able to flip 180 degrees. Great for vlogging and seeing what you are filming. This camera came out in this summer and it was still cheaper than the Sony RX100 M4 even till this day, which came out in mid 2015. The Sony RX100 M5 came out and its $1000. That’s a $300 difference. How much different between the photos and videos? Not much. 4K, Slow Mo, Super Slow Mo, Super Duper Slow Mo, okay but do you use it all the time? For me, I wont spend that kind of money for a pocket camera. This $700 is more than viable for the things I do. Do purchase a screen protector. Lexmor been my favorite but they have not made one for them yet. The screen protector I have is very flimsy but its doable for now. Do get extra batteries. On 60FPS for video it shoots 16 minutes and 24 seconds max. It can record over 1 hours with a canon battery. I always have extra batteries. I know its a bit pricey $50 for canon battery but hey do you want your camera exploding in your face? I did have great experience with Wasabi batteries not sure they made a generic one for this model yet. Overall I like this camera and it gets the job done. I didn’t want the lens to protrude while off. I’ve attached a screen shot of the pic I took with this camera. It was a minor touch up with VSCO filter. I’ve already ordered this in max size of 18″X12″ print to see how it looks with 300dpi. The camera to phone connection does suck. I need to be on a real wifi signal to connect. On the Sony I can connect my phone through bluetooth. If I am underground, on a plane the Sony was no problem. The Canon wont work. Also the Canon app isn’t great compared to the Sony. It lags a lot. That’s not gonna ruin my experience what so ever. It’s not a big deal. I made a few videos from my trip with this camera because I did not want to carry any DSLR with me. All my friends thought I had some kind of professional camera. Nope. I had a camera that fits inside my pocket. Do check it out. youtube dot com /hellowu I’ll def keep this camera through the entire 2017. Hopefully I can use and abuse the heck out of this camera to get my money’s worth!

    Say yes to the camera

Great quality! Couldn’t be happier with this purchase. I am not a photographer and don’t want to be, hence looking into point and shoot cameras. I wanted fast focus and better than cellphone quality – which this camera has more than delivered.Took it on vacation and loved how great the photos came out: optical zoom is life. I didn’t use the camera *all* the time (we were busy hiking and doing stuff) so for me the battery life was plenty good. Needed two batteries for the 5 day trip, the first died midday on day 3 but I got the video creator kit which comes with a spare battery so I was ready. Weight was a non-issue, I got a small case and we clipped it into our belts while hiking and barely registered it was there until we needed to use it.Watched a couple videos on how to use the camera ahead of the vacation but didn’t absorb much, just made sure to click the setting so that files transferred to my cell wouldn’t lose picture quality. Planning to learn a bit more about how to use it, but it was seriously easy on only a few settings to get really good photos. Menus seem easy.Purchased a silicone skin for it in hot pink – so it ended up looking more like a toy camera than the expensive one it really is. That way, I felt confident handing it to strangers for them to take our picture! This is a nice enough camera, especially if you’re on MY budget, so I don’t want to take chances with theft! Oh, and get the screen protectors they’re perfect too.

I’m in love with the G7x Mark II

I’m in love with the G7x Mark II. While primarily a sports photographer, I began to branch out into street photography. There was no way that i wanted to lug around my zoom lenses and my Canon DSLR.I wanted something light, easy to handle and carry, and something where I can be more “discreet” with my subjects.I read through a ton of different opinions but I settled on the G7X because of my comfort level with Canon and the understanding of their menu. The first day of shooting, I simply put the camera on auto and started shooting around town. I couldn’t believe the simplicity, ease of use, and clarity of the images. Very impressed.Having a full 1 inch sensor makes an enormous difference and on that first day I ended up using it in a darkened restaurant, a jazz club, a bright and sunny downtown main street, but I never took it off “auto”.When I loaded the images on my laptop, I couldn’t believe how sharp they looked. I made some very minor adjustments to the images using photoshop and they were ready to go.This thing is a gem. It has a surprising amount of zoom capability for such a small size and I love not having to use the view finder or hold the camera up to my eye to compose the image. This guy would be great for a travel camera, street photography, or any amateur looking for an above average camera that is easy to use but doesn’t want to spend a fortune on a full DSLR.

    My favorite camera

The camera itself is so good. I was nervous to buy this due to the price but the rave over it is understandable. I don’t go anywhere without it. The quality of pictures is just amazing. I love how the screen flips up so you can see yourself when taking the pictures. My one concern was from the buyer. The strap was supposed to be included and I never received it so that was slightly annoying. Other than that great camera.

If you wanted the RX100 but like Canon menu/thinking/design better, you got it. Best P&S Camera I have owned yet.

FYI: I got this yesterday morning so it’s about 24 hours in, I have about 125 pictures on it so far…I will update as time goes on.My intended use for this camera is a “bridge camera”. I have a new iPhone and the requisite (meh) Olloclips for it, some Canon DSLR’s and a Canon S120 for everything in between. The G7X II is going to replace the Canon S120 in my collection as the unit that rides in the center console of my car in a case, or in my pocket at events I don’t want to carry a DSLR at but still want some ok zoom and better than phone pictures.I am writing this early review because, I’ve been a Canon guy over the years. Had Canon P&S units starting with the digital ELPH through the S120 , and then more recently got into their DSLRs. So yeah I like Canon, but for years I kept bought the Sony RX100’s. I really wanted to like the Sony but never quite “got” it.The G7X II, to me – while a little bigger handling than the RX100’s, is finally the Canon P&S that does what I really hoped they would do. It provides some incredible pictures that are actually better than the (current gen) RX100 finally. The photos aren’t as oversaturated as the Sony which I like, the IS works very consistently, and bokeh is of course great at the larger apertures. Higher iso (800 area) is still usable for smaller prints which is remarkable for a P&S of any sort. It shoots RAW fast and its shot-to-shot and burst modes are amazing.Regarding the RX100’s, their picture quality was amazing, their size was a bit larger than I cared for but, their controls, menus, options, and design (like paying extra for a 12$ grip!) annoyed me, then the whole buying a separate external charger thing to charge my spare battery, really? I know its 30$ or whatever but it just got annoying ..they got returned. Really it was their menus and weird software that just irked me and I couldn’t overlook it. The G7X bests that all.On the G7X II , controls are great and similar to any of the other “red-ring’ Powershot G series (or DSLR’s, P&S, etc.).Being able to adjust exposure comp and other settings with the hard controls while you can still use it one handed is great. I also love the fact they included a detent/non-detent switch for using the ring dial. That is BRILLIANT as heck since I can now get the stops I want when shooting manual stills, but the flexibility for seamless and silent zoom when in video. Of course it also includes the silly wall charger Sony wouldn’t, and out of box has a nice set of grips on it. Did I mention the menuing, controls, and software are all Canon finally too? I mean…finally, stunning P&S photos without the Sony software layer ahhhhh.Comparing this to my Canon S120, its obviously faster, larger, but menus are very similar. The wireless on this thing is better and faster, and smarter. The touchscreen seems more accurate in sensitivity and color, the fact it articulates for selfie and variable angle modes is awesome, didn’t think I would care much but that is really handy.I have no idea on battery life yet but the fact you can charge this via microUSB is AWESOME for me. Of course the fact I can charge a second battery in the (included) wall charger is very nice, thanks for not being weird about that Canon.Oh the pictures? yeah…they are night and day over the S120 just using auto and scene modes. Since this is a P&S unit, I love that I can shoot RAW with AUTO settings now. Going into manual mode it becomes evident the G7x II has a bit more capable sensor than the S120, which is why I’m here anyways.Pros:- Great pictures.- Touch screen that works great and the touch to focus is awesome and quick.- Great control set, GREAT grips, engineering, design, thinking.- Nice flippable flash, easy to bounce in smaller spaces.- Menu’s are classic Canon, love it or hate it.- MicroUSB charging (could be faster, but its in there!)- Time lapse mode (have not explored yet, but looking forward to it)- Would not call it a pocket camera but it can still be fit in a pocket (its big, it will bulge some in shorts, better for a coat or vest etc. but it fits), but all controls and functions are at least easy to use as a result of this.Cons:- No 4k video. Amazing video quality, but lack of 4k just seems like an oversight here. Not enough to push me away, but I’d have dropped another 100$-200$ for this.- Size goes on both lists…yes is a bit large, but all those controls and electronics need somewhere to go. It’s just not something I am going to hand to my wife without a case and expect her to carry when she takes our daughter to the zoo. It needs a case, with some padding.- Zoom (I am reaching here…just to keep the list somewhat balanced) I wouldn’t have minded an 120mm equivalent here. The 100 will still cause me to keep it because I hate the digital zoom on my phones.- Wish it had GPS or at least a compass built in.Overall, I bought this thinking I would be disappointed and return it. Instead I was pleasantly surprised and as of this moment I am planning on listing my S120 on eBay next weekend. If you are looking for a “simple” camera that has the ability to go where other P&S’s don’t quality wise, don’t mind a bit larger camera, or just want the P&S camera that makes you look like you know what you’re doing…I think the G7X II ticks those boxes. As I type this, my girl is at a family bridal shower with the G7X II. She’s used my S120 for awhile now and just before she left I handed her the G7X II and said don’t worry – try this one (with no further instructions). I asked how the new camera was working for her “things look better on this camera than they do in real life” , I was really expecting a “how do I” so…I guess it’s behaving well :)I will update this in the next week or so, if there is anything you’d like to see that could help improve this review let me know. Thanks for your time, and for reading my review today.-Chris

    Perfect for Travel

As a Nikon full-frame DSLR user I was eagerly awaiting the Nikon DL Compacts but due to ongoing delays and an upcoming trip, I took a leap of faith at the “Canon” G7x Mark II as I really did not want to lug a full-frame camera with lenses on this trip (mostly city sights, friends, food, etc.) After weeks of use, I can honestly say that my initial fears of missing full-frame picture quality are gone…..this camera takes great stills that are sharp with great color rendition. You can look up countless reviews, specs, and accolades but from a travel camera point-of-view, I’m very pleased. The menus and handling are fine once you get use to them (different from Nikon) and the grip and ergonomics are also great (once you get used to the smaller body and lighter weight). I wasn’t intending on taking a lot of video but I can’t wait to actually use it for video as the focus is consistent and the videos are clear and actually better than the DSLR (no lens focus noises and faster focusing). I do notice that focus and ISO noise are slightly lower performing in low-light compared to full-frame but that’s to be expected with the smaller sensor. Overall I’m very pleased and glad to have a smaller camera that’s perfect for travel or around town use that hasn’t made me regret not bringing the DSLR instead (so far!). I’m not a vlogger but I can totally understand why this is the go-to camera for many you-tubers and vloggers!

Probably the best point and shoot in its price range/ best for vlogging

This camera is probably the best point and shoot you can get, with its versatile settings, ergonomics, and software you should be able to shoot masterpieces in no time. IF YOU ARE NOT TECH SAVY…..do not expect to take breath taking videos and photos!! Though this cameras auto features get the job done amazing, there still is a level of skill required to take those instagram famous pictures you see all over the internet. Sound quality has pretty high gain so you can keep your inside voice every where and the camera will pick up your voice and the surroundings fine. The clicking noise caught in the video soundtrack issue that occurred on the g7x is almost completely eliminated.Auto focus was greatly inproced, though sill a bit of a hassle when on the go shooting. Alot of those issues can be fixed by using the custom setting and tailoring it to your needs. It shoots in almost all recognized FPS settings to include 24 fps and 60 fps and allows for a wide variety of adjustments to shutter speed and ISO speed. The ISO ranges from 125 to 12800The ring that cops around the lens can he set to adjust zoom focus and practically any other setting in the menu 👍🏻👍🏻Even in full zoom this camera takes some pretty detailed shots .This camera also has a simple wifi pic transfer that works with almost all handheld devices that have an app store.Built in flash makes for stunning and unbelievably detailed shotsThe exposure dial comes in clutch to make your pictures and videos just right. This camera features a ton of adjustments for basic color and exposure correction (comparable to instagram editing capabilities) also this camera has a built in picture and video editor !! Very useful on the go.The hybrid auto mode has a cool story feature that you might want to look into as well as a time lapse mode that shoots in image bursts to save your camera space. The camera starts up very fast for spontaneous shooting. The body is beautiful and gives the camera a modern twist in vintage compact cameras. The camera is about a third thicker then it’s predecessor the g7x and is noticeably dense and heavier (which I like alot)If you vlog it’s the best you can get. If your a seasoned photographer it gives you room to set the camera to your taste. If you never owned a camera and wan to learn (which will take time) and if you don’t mind breaking the bank it’s not my first pick for a beginners camera but it’s up there. I give this camera a 4.5 out of 5. And a 5 point and shoot camera in my opinion is around 2000 $. So I do recommend purchasing this.Let me know if I got any of the details wrong.🙏

Not a good selection for fast and easy pictures

I take lots of pictures of houses, inside and out, for my job. My Pixel 4a 5g works great for this…it is super easy to use, great low light capabilities, and you get vary few blurry pictures. However, i got tired of having to separate work from personal pictures so decided to get a separate camera. I tried out a $500 waterproof shock proof camera and it wasn’t very good, so I returned it and decided to just get top end point and shoot, so selected the G7 X Mark II. To test it out, I took images with it and then immediately took the same photo with my Pixel. The Canon images were darker, more often blurry, and just more difficult to use. I tried it at home and at work, both times the Pixel was just a better choice. So i returned this camera and bought another Pixel. For full disclosure, I am not a professional photographer and have no idea how to use the more advance features of the camera. I put it on auto and waited for it to focus then snap the picture. Reading other people’s reviews of the amazing things they can do with the camera seems awesome which is why I tried it out; however, for my need for a fast, simple, and reliably good image, this did not work for me.

A must buy for vloggers or youtube video creators

So far, this camera has been wonderful. I took it to film cosplayers this weekend at Denver Comic Con, and it was right there when I needed it. Full auto settings ended up very nice, although sometimes I would have to adjust a bit as I was over or under exposed. Throughout a strenuous weekend of turning the machine on and off, point, shoot, stop, point shoot again – it handled things like a champ. I’ve reviewed some of the footage, and so far it seems very stable overall (I do have practice at this so my hand is pretty steady at this point, but the digital stabilization made it that much smoother). This camera replaced my hefty xf-100 plus glide cam setup i’ve been using for years, and I have to say I did not miss it. This camera is responsive, takes great looking video (I did 1080 @ 60 fps), and is small enough to fit in my pocket. This is a must buy for YouTube creators and vloggers. Only gripe was I had one time where the auto focus was having trouble grabbing the right point of focus. But only one time, out of probably hundreds of times I pointed the camera at something over the weekend. For reference, I bought I high end SD card capable of 90 MB/s write speed. You’ll want high write speed for video on this for sure.

Expensive but worth it. Wifi problematic.

This camera is the bomb!!! Unlike some posting here, I am by no means a professional photographer. I own 3 canon point & shoot type cameras & this is far far away the best! The automatic shooting modes give at best mediocre results, in my humble opinion. But by just branching out slightly into the aperture modes, even a hobbyist photographer with mediocre ability like me can with this camera even in lowish lighting conditions achieve controlled, even somewhat artistic results as I found playing with it on day #2 with no flash and no tripod. Incredible picture quality. There is one silly nit running through all the canon cameras of which the buyer should be aware. It appears impossible to use the vaunted wifi capability with windows 10. I have spent hours trying to make it work, then a google search showed there are crowds out there facing the same frustration. So if you think you’ll take pictures and beam them to your win10 OS computer, look for another camera. If you’re content to just shuffle the card out & read it or do something else and will settle for a terrific compact point & shoot camera that can really almost function as a DSLR replacement, this is the camera to buy. It’s expensive, but worth every penny!

    Perfect for Amateurs Photographers

Do you want to post amazing Instagram photos? This baby is it — G7 X II !! I am not a professional photographer but I enjoy capturing memories from birthdays, graduations, weddings, and life adventures. I get compliments from my friends and family. And they always ask what camera I use. I’ve owned Canon cameras since 2004 and always enjoyed their products. As for the G7 series, I owned the predecessor but the lens broke after 2 years of use so I decided to upgrade to the latest model. Attached is a shot I took at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge in Vancouver, CA.Pros:- Light and portable- Amazing for outdoors/ day lighting- Good in low lighting- Easy and simple to use- Photos are crisp and sharp- Great for amateur photographers like myself- Fantastic video qualityCons:- Auto focus is extremely slow. It’s faster to just turn off the camera then it back turn on to refocus- Shutter speed is slow and would lag- Battery life typically last a 3-4 hours if you’re constantly recording

The G7 Mk-II is an excellent upgrade from a good Point and Shoot

The quality of the camera’s construction is impressive. Things that stand out include; the metal control knobs are knurled, the grip surfaces have a textured rubber coating. The menus for the many settings, features and options are accessible on the touch screen using menus that are well organized so that they are easier to navigate and learn. The low light performance is very good, and actually amazing to me.The bright touch screen tilts down which helps make it more visible in sunlight or visible when the camera is being held over my head. It is a little larger and heavier than the much less expensive point and shoot it replaces but the difference in performance more than makes up for it.The camera was bought as a replacement but it is very fun to use so that I’ve experimented under a range of lighting conditions quite a bit in the month that I’ve owned it. It has performed very well allowing me to concentrate more on composing good shots and less on the camera. The capability of this G7 takes me back to my bachelor days when shooting pictures with a film SLR occupied a lot of my free time.

    Works Great

I’ve been using this camera to film content for about a year now and I really love it. The controls are easy to use and understand. All of my pictures and videos come out crisp. Really great for someone who wants to have high quality filming/pictures without breaking the bank too much.

    Excellent Pictures, Poor Audio

I love the pictures, but quiet videos have a lot of audible static hiss. I’ve done everything I could to fix this problem: wind filter on and off, attenuator on and off, auto-focus on and off, but the static hiss noise remains. My seven year old Canon G12 which cost less than the G7X Mark II has much better audio and much cleaner audio.I took some videos down by the lake shore. I thought it would be nice to hear the gentle lapping water and the occasional distant call of a bird of prey. But in the videos I can barely hear anything over the static rumble and hiss. I’ve had the camera a year now, and am still shocked by the poor audio quality. Even in the quietest forest, it sounds like I’m near a waterfall. This is an expensive camera, and a good stereo microphone is a must. It’s an excellent image camera, but it does not rise to its full potential because of the poor audio.

    Expensive Not Worth the Price

This is a nice compact camera, pretty user friendly but not much information in the booklet about usage and it does not come with a transfer cable. If you do not have wifi you cannot upload your photos to your phone or laptop. Had to order a cable. For the price of this camera it should have been included. So far I do not see anything worth the price. There are comparable cameras for much less. May be sending it back

    great compact camera

I’ve had this camera since it came out and have used it extensively as a DSLR replacement while traveling, for both stills and video. It is well built and feels good in your hand. If you are in a hurry just put it in auto and it takes great stills and video. If you want, the manual controls let you do everything a DSLR does. It’s not a super zoom but I’ll take the image quality over zoom range every time. The low light capability blows my 70D with an 18-135 STM lens out of the water. I just finished a 3-camera video shoot of a musical and put the G-7 on a mini tripod beside me, more as an experiment than anything else. I was stunned. It ran for well over an hour on the tiny battery and the video it produced blended nicely with my HD camcorders and the 70D. Much to my surprise I ended up with a 4-camera shoot! I never use camera on board audio in a production but in this case I actually included a bit of the G-7’s audio in the blend so that too was a surprise. If there is a negative I guess it would be the lack of 4k video and an external audio input but otherwise it’s a compact camera that punches far above it’s weight.

you can film and take pictures while it’s plugged in but…

camera CAN record while charging if you buy the separate AC adapter and plug it in. however, even though you can charge while filming, because of the way the AC adapter is designed for this camera, you have to leave the battery compartment open and since it opens from the bottom, you won’t be able to use a standard tripod because you won’t be able to mount the camera while the lid for the battery is open (because that’s where the AC adapter is plugged in).no mic input.the flip screen is sturdy so you don’t have to flip it at the full 180° upside-down.it has a scene feature that will take pics with a defocused background so with just a click, you can go right into that mode.there is no extra cable to download files directly from the camera so you’ll need to do it via WiFi or with a separate sd card reader. with that being said, it is required for you to download separate software to your computer in order to have the camera connect to it.sometimes, when I’m transferring very large video files via WiFi to my computer, the camera disconnects so the file never gets transferred and I have to start all over again.

I love the camera but it has a couple of flaws…..

I really love this product, but it definitely has it’s pros and cons.Pros:-The picture quality is top notch. I went from using a Go Pro and my cell phone, and this was a huge step up. Clear picture on both video and pictures.- It is super light weight. I took this camera along with me on a day out and it didn’t feel like I was holding a brick when I was filming.- The flip screen makes life SO much easier. I make videos for a non-profit organization and my Go Pro made the video making time take twice as long. I went from spending all of my time getting home after filming and realizing that I would need to refilm everything because of the lighting to easily re-filming something on the spot.- This camera is a pro in low lighting. I can finally film at night and without huge lights.Cons:-This camera makes a terrible clicking noise when trying to focus. This is honestly such a turn-off and almost made me return the camera.-The focus on this camera can be a bit slow. In low lighting, the camera can sometimes take a while to focus on an object. It is really frustrating.Overall, the good out weights the bad. Do your research and take into account why you are purchasing the item.

Feels like a quality camera, nice build…

Purchased for possible vlogging and for filming YouTube videos overhead. No jack for external mic (not problematic for me as I do voiceovers in post). Flip screen is really nice to have so you can see what’s in focus. Touch screen with tap to focus is also very nice. Cannot charge while filming, but can purchase an additional AC adapter to power the camera while filming, which I did… I purchased spare battery pack; battery life is kinda poor and I wouldn’t advise relying on just the one it comes with. Also purchased 3rd party screen protectors, which were easy to install. Not the most intuitive or user friendly interface. Quick Release plate on my tripod makes it difficult to access the SD card so you have to remove the camera from the Quick Release Plate. Transferring footage over WIFI via the app to an iPad for editing is cumbersome. Perhaps a different camera mount for my particular use will resolve this…It’s a nice camera, but hasn’t been easy to incorporate into my work flow at this point… And, I’m past the return window for both it and all the accessories I purchased for it so I’m stuck with it…

    Awesome vlogging camera

So far I love this camera. VERY good build quality and is easy to hold. I am still fairly new to photography but I use this mostly for vlogs on my Youtube channel (Black City). The picture quality is so good it’s unreal. Although it does pick up on wind noise, I can still be heard quite clearly. This camera is not as advanced as a DSLR but is still more advanced than any normal point n shoot camera.I like the screen on the back that can flip in multiple ways but this camera’s real use is in vlogging. It’s perfect for that.I do wish it came with a USB cable but that’s not a big deal. The battery is one gripe that I don’t like. Usually I can get about 2 1/2 hours out of it. 3 maybe. I do have extra batteries but they are not OEM. This camera will give you a warning if you use aftermarket batteries. So far I haven’t had any issues with them. I will keep this post updated. There are no major accessories that you can use with this as far as I know. If you are looking to attach a mic or better lenses you may want to look at a different camera. This one is set up to work out of the box and for that I love it.
